If you have any firewalls on any of them, including Windows firewalls you have turn them off or learn how to set them up to incorporate your network users into the network. Windows XP firewall likes to turn its self on automatically.
Also if you're using a router for the Internet gateway you'll have to include all of the local IP addresses to be allowed full access.
Have you and your sister set up shared folders?

Simple method to disable and enable Windows Firewall:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/icf.mspx
unfortunately sometimes XP firewall will re-enable itself if switched off this way; the better method is to disable the service:
control panel>Administrative Tools>Services>right-click "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and goto properties>select disable
that will completely disable the firewall service. please be aware that a third party firewall should be installed if u do this - ZoneAlarm Firewall is a free to use firewall.
when setting up the network did you run it on the XP machine first using the network Wizard and create the network floppy disk to use on the other machines?
personally i really wouldn't stop the XP machine from receiving it updates due to all the security holes...

Disabling automatic updates is not an issue, that if you check for new or highly critical updates manually from time to time..

firewall can be a bad thing sometimes. if u want to disable firewall, i suggest u use mozilla firefox<------foxes are cool

bdly configured firewalls are bad and so is the one with Windows XP - since there are better free alternatives out there i always recommend ppl use them instead of the XP one. But under no circumstances would i ever consider disabling my firewall for anthing longer than a few minutes; to comprise internet security any longer than need be is reckless.
even if u use firefox u will still need a firewall; the only benefits for firefox is the spyware/virus issue.
