View Full Version : Banner ADs

I am sure most of you have already noticed the banner ads on MPC, if you haven't I really don’t know what to say... you must be blind, but in that case how the hell are you browsing MPC anyways :P

In any case several people have been asking about the ads so I am posting here to try and clear up any questions.

Q: Why are the ads here?
A: MPC has become so big that we can no longer pay all of the expenses out of our own pockets, this is a hobby for us and we are not rich so paying for hosting, software licences (the forum requires a licence), skins, etc. requires quite a bit money now, money that we cannot simply shell out.

Q: But the ads are annoying why don't you take them off?
A: We would have proffered to not have ads up as well but like I said in the previous answer we simply cannot afford to keep MPC ad free anymore.

Q: Are the ads clean to click or will they give me adware/trojans/viruses?
A: We, of course, cannot take any responsibility for the sites in these ads; however, these ads are being hosted through a well known ad publishing company so the links should be safe since they check them all before accepting them.

Q: Do I have to click the ads?
A: No you do not have to click the ads unless of course you are interested in what they have to offer, we will not get anything if people just click the ads, those clicks are ignored, we will only get something if you click the link being interested in what the ad is for, you’re not forced to buy anything of course.

Q: I really hate ads, I will do ANYTHING to get rid of them! *kneels down*
A: As much as I do need to bust a nut right now I am not really interested in THAT (you sick bastards!); however, there is in fact something you can do to get rid of the ads for yourself, since we still need the money to cover our monthly costs it will not be free, but it is a fair price to pay to get rid of the ads we thing. Go over to http://www.mpcforum.com/subscriptions.php and check out the packages we are offering.

Q: If I buy one of the subscriptions will I get the supporter tag?
A: No, the supporter tag is reserved for donors, if you want to donate to MPC you can still do that but that will not affect the ads.

Q: I am filthy rich and I hate ads what can I do to keep MPC ad free?
A: Send me a PM and we can try to work out a price :P

Where do we post that we have donated? I just sent $5 for a 3 month subscription, how do you know it was me? Was my nick automatically added to the details of the transaction?

Edit: I see it's automated, nice work! :D

people are mostly talking about the ads bellow the reply button, those are the new ones, the release dates always were there, the release dates are linking to one of g*'s sites

How much do the adds bring in daily? I Click these and agerage's But agerage has mimimal funds

luck777jojo
29th September 2005, 20:57
depends on the ad and the type of click, with targetfirst just default clicks from people who click and close don't count (which is good cause google banned us because of some bastard who was clicking the ads like 100 time/minute) so only clicks where the person actually visits the site (clicks the links there, reads the info, maybe buys something) bring us money.

And even then it all depends on the placement mark, the better the placement evaluation the more money it brings in.

if we make around $60-$70/month I am very happy, it's enough to cover vbb licence costs and styles and other shit, though since I am very happy with that you can probably guess we don't make that often :P

In any case targetfirst works better than clicksor so I'm suggesting to VF to switch over; however, he wants to get the money clicksor owes him first ;) :P

Right, you can detect Firefox extensions with it as well? I think not. I don't see a single ad within my Firefox 1.0.7 browser, no text, images, flash or any kind of ad. I see pages the way they were meant to be displayed. I prefer not seeing annoying and distractive ads. Plus, pages tend to load a bit quicker. The Internet as a whole is just a lot more enjoyable.

But, since I enjoy visiting MPC, I often open up old outdated Internet Explorer 7, and have a looksy at those ads and give em all a click or two, of couse I click anything that loads up that I think might be needed to be clicked in order for MPC to make a bit of money. How many cents, or parts of a cent do most ads bring in for every click?

I dont think there is any problem with these ads many websites do that :P
They dont bother me I would rather have ads then MPC down

I think we should add a warning for talk about blocking ads. We try to keep the forum online with the income of ads and all we hear is how tough you are by blocking them. Good job for leeching the forums bandwidth. :|

JAvEX
11th October 2005, 05:31
@Diddle, not loading ads will use less bandwidth. I didn't say I was tough, I simply explained that when I use FF, I do not see any ads. I then explained how I often open up IE to view MPC so I can click the ads. That is not leeching.

All I was saying was that I don't like ads. But I will endure them in order to support the forums. A warning for talking about blocking ads, thats just stupid, I am positive that at least half the people that view these forums have some sort of ad/pop-up blocker. Although, seeing from your point of view, less talk about blocking ads means less people blocking ads, in return it means more ad clicking.

Anyway, I'd rather donate than click on ads, but for some reason, my PayPal account was disabled. No idea why. Do you guys accept donations straight from a online bank account. My bank is um, https://www.scotiaonline.scotiabank.com/.... I would be donating Canadian money, seeing as how I am Canadian, lol. Thats like 85+ cents for every 1 American dollar.

I run five websites myself. My companies two websites. And then three of my own. My company has enough income, so they don't have any ads on either websites. But on my websites, that money comes out of my own pocket. Of course they do NOT receive as many visitors as MPC probably does, but one of them does receive a significant amount, and altogether probably about half as many visitors as MPC. But one of my websites are for transferring files for my friends/business associates/family and whatnot, and the bandwidth needed for just one day is outrageously... And NONE of my sites have ads. They all take kindly to donations though.

So don't talk to me about leeching. Its just annoying when I have already explained that I do click on the ads. Maybe you should try reading the entire post before replying to it. (Incase you were speaking to someone else, then I take anything mean I said to you back, lol. If you were speaking to me, then I don't take anything back.).

I wasn't talking to you in specific, my apologies for making it look so. You're a helpful member at MPC and that is a donation in its own way.
I was talking to people who block ads without donating at least something and only come here to get hacks, ask their question and be on their way again. :).

Thats really too bad, I hope that the paypal people were able to trace his/her IP. Also, hope you knew what member it was so you could ban him/her. Can paypal even do that? Would they not just freeze the account and remove all donations made from stolen paypal accounts? That would make a lot more sense than to steal all the money in the donation account. I hope the account comes back from the dead with the non stolen money... lol. Guess life sucks sometimes. Stupid person goes and messes everything up...

Now, unless you have something else setup to bring in money. And the only way of getting money to pay for MPC is to have banner ads, and I approve of that. And I will make sure to go out of my way to click on them and view these ads.

meh I don't get these people, they visit MPC, the post here, the use chats posted here, they don't donate, they block ads and they expect everything to be fine. I mean I'm not using the money we get from the ads for my own proffit here guys.

All we're hoping for now is to get the $600 we need for the server upgrade, as soon as we get that you can be sure I will be easing up on the ads, seriously easing up on them.
I just don't want our server to die and us not have the money to fix it becuase we didn't upgrade when needed.

LouCypher
29th November 2005, 15:45
It isn't banner ads that bother me its the damn popunder recently added. I don't want some javascript included in every page loading HTML from some unknown site trying to set cookies and do god knows what just to view a site I'd otherwise trust. Even more annoying is sitting in a quiet room not very mindful of the speaker volume until an ad site comes up with an embedded flash that feels the need to play crappy techno or even worse TALK to me explaining the benefits of their latest ***** enhancement product.

The only thing that bothers me was the pop under that attempted to install an ActiveX control.
Aside from that, if it helps you folks pay the bills, I'll deal for a while.

For the rest of you, at least let SOME of them through otherwise he's not going to get the $ for the click.
Hence: You ain't doing your part. These, in a way, ARE donations.

He said after they get the server upgraded he'll ease off.
All this knowledge is here for FREE so take it easy...

Diddle
29th November 2005, 19:37
Thank you fidgaf, you took the words right out of my mouth. I agree with you that these ActiveX shit shouldn't be there and luck is looking into it right now, but all we can do is start filtering the content. As you said, the popups will have to stay until we have that new server because as you notice, MPC isn't exactly the fastest forum at the moment.

fidgaf
29th November 2005, 19:57
Fast? What's that?
NP... ;)

I run both a Public and a Private VoIP Ventrilo server myself for Ioncross.com.
When people start complaining I just remind them who's paying the bills... Me... And it's Free...

When people complain I just start detailing the costs:
Server = $500-600 + Upgrades like CPU, Ram & HD's.
ISP = $50 a month, VoIP uses about 20% so let's say $10 a month for the server. Land Line just in case of Cable Failure: $19.99 a month.
Heat, Air Conditioning & Electricity = Non-Stop, 24/7 service... I'm not sure of $ exactly...
UPS for server = $250
Software = Whatever WinXP Pro SP2 is going for now. $150 give or take a few $.
Router = Port forwarding needed, didn't really need one before now - $60-100
My Time = Computers is what I do for a living. I have to update and Admin the server PLUS all the time it took to setup. That's got to be worth something. It's also siphoning off some of my bandwidth and I'm getting a little lag on heavy usage days.

For some very close friends I host various games and run a 24/7 Private VoIP as well.

I TOTALLY understand...

What? Explain?
Action is being taking against?

i think he meant action is being taken to correct the bad popups and laggyness?

dunno though

if he was referring to what luck said then that would be pretty ****ed up

popups dont bug me, but saving 'trojan downloaders' to my temp directory and giving me debugger errors for the ads script does, but i / we / them will live

luck777jojo
30th November 2005, 04:11
okay the entire staff team is checking all the ads now so they're all fine and dandy, if you guys see a "bad" ad which is trying to install activex or whatnot please report it in this thread and I will report it to the ad company ASAP.

The ad company we're using now does not allow adult content or activex or whatever else might be "iffy" so chances are if you see an ad with either of that content it just slipped through their filters and reporting it is the fastest way to fix things.
