Ok, guys before you go freaking out saying oh crap! 1.8.3 patch has released a blizzard launcher which will look for my hacks and cracks and whatever doodah i have, make sure you read the note carefully. it shows a link which i will post the specifics.

Q: What is the purpose of the Blizzard Launcher?
A: The Blizzard Launcher serves many purposes. Some of which are:

* Distribute news to those who may not visit the World of Warcraft website regularly
* Keep the public up to date on issues that may affect their gameplay
* Protect the user from viruses and other malicious programs that may attempt to steal their account name and password
* Uphold the Terms of Use by warning players who have cheat programs installed on the computers on which they’re playing World of Warcraft that the cheat programs are there.

Q: Why does the Blizzard Launcher say I am using a 3rd party cheat program?
A: Blizzard Entertainment is attempting to keep the World of Warcraft game service fair and free from players who use “cheats” or “hacks.” To further battle cheating in World of Warcraft, you will be notified if you are running a program that is deemed by Blizzard Entertainment to be a 3rd -party cheat program that violates the Terms of Use agreement. We have found that players do not always realize that a cheat program has been installed on the computer on which they’re playing, especially in the case of Internet gaming cafés and single-computer households. The Blizzard Launcher’s virus/cheat scan does not transmit any information to Blizzard. The main purpose of this scan is to notify you if you have something installed on the computer you’re using that may put your account information or your access to World of Warcraft at risk.

PAY ATTENTION ►►►►►▲CLEARLY STATES! The Blizzard Launcher’s virus/cheat scan does not transmit any information to Blizzard. The main purpose of this scan is to notify you if you have something installed on the computer you’re using that may put your account information or your access to World of Warcraft at risk. So don't freak out or run off deleteing your hacks and what not.

The reason i posted all this is too save people time running off making topics about my hacks are being detected and such.. if they are detected then there probably not safe anyhow. but i might be wrong. ill let faldo answer that or one of the wisemen of the forum. i doubt syndrome will be noticed and if there is any lies within blizzards comments or actions im sure they will be discovered shortly, also im sure that Syndrome will be out in a timely manner. so stop asking me on MSN please people. Faldo will post when its out.

- World of Warcraft Client Patch 1.8.3 (2005-11-08)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Blizzard Launcher

A new launch utility has been created to enhance your entry into World
of Warcraft! The Blizzard Launcher will provide up-to-date news and
important event- and support-related updates. In some regions, the
Blizzard Launcher also scans for Trojan viruses and third party cheat
programs and notifies you if it has located any on your machine. In
addition to providing you with the benefits of additional anti-virus
protection, the scan that the launcher conducts represents another
security measure to protect your World of Warcraft account information
and gameplay experience. For further details, please go to
http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww01907p1.

General
- The AddOn button should now properly show on the character selection
screen for players using custom interfaces.

Thanks for the additional heads-up. I am very patient as far as new releases go, and now that Blizzard has 'finally' put a fully client-side cheat detection device on their product, it's even more understandable that it may take a while to get some bugs worked out of the system. They can keep throwing monkey wrenches into our gears, but WoW has a lot of unexplored gears to toy with. :P

I'm going to try to toy with ways to hide some trinkets from their detection program. I'll post any interesting findings.

Guys, you do realise that now we'll know if he hack we're using is detected. That means that if you get banned, most likely it won't be a surprise. You would have been warned, and you'll know if your hacks aren't working.

Yes, but if you go by every other virus-scanner or cheat-scanner out there, chances are quite high that the Launcher merely looks for programs which are capable of editing the data of another program - which means some programs which are either of no use or are not even cheat programs or viruses are going to show up on the Launcher.

Well, i kind of look at this as an oportunity. I don't know yet how advanced this launcher of theirs is, but i'll be surprised to see it detect Syndrome in it's current state.
Heck, if it's scanning your harddrive and can't see version 0.82 of Syndrome, I'll have proven my point =)

You tell 'em Faldo! lol. Well i'm still a bit worried about this. Do you think it will detect wowglider?

spektra
16th November 2005, 07:36
maybe, wowglider but... syndrome i doubt it i mean for one it would have to look in %systemroot%/systerm32/randomfilename.jpg for some of it, plus im pretty sure they won't know all the random names of it... hey faldo are the names on syndrome completely randomly seeded or just a bunch of names you shoved in there? anyhow i think it will mainly scan for things like BWH and others.

One of the players in my guild works for BLizzard. I met him down at BLizzCon and picked his brain a little bit.

He told me bizz has the toughest time with farmers from other countrys. They ban and ban and ban, but a week after the ban takes place the person is back online with a new acount as is farming away.

As far as the "scaning" they search for a pre-set list of programs running in your backgroud known to be "hacks and cheats". The reason allot of people get warnings before fullout bans is because there are alot of addons out there that use code supported by blizzard, but are cheats.

They also know that simply seeing something, or being told you are "botting" inst enough. He says that if a person is banned its usually not something he/she has done righ that second, but a series of things that BLizzard has been able to watch and track.

just what he told me. grain of salt.

Aahaha... well it clearly cannot detect Syndrome... neither the systemroot files or even the main executable, as far as the interface knows it doesn't exist. This means either that it is not on Blizzards sh*t list, or that it does not know what to look for or how to. Either way, we seem to be in the clear for Syndrome. I haven't tried it with WoWGlider, but I'll give it a few tests when I am at my home machine. Chances are that WoWGlider is one of the things it is looking for, along with BWH. Just remember that if these are detected, it does not necessarily mean you will be banned. Remember that the launcher does not communicate this information to Blizzard. So even if it knows it is there, you can shove it in the launchers face and play with your little trinkets anyways. Until Warden can detect them in their current state without a GM eyeing you, there isn't much to worry about. :nzd:

even the picture files for syndrome have random name files lol
if you wanna know where look too *assuming your running windows xp or 2000
C:\windows\system32\ switch to thumbnail view, and look down and you will eventualy see a file with the pictures from syndromes interface.. note the name of that file is random. That's protection for ya

lol, question though is wat is syndrome?

Uummmmmmm......... what???!!

Haha, that's a joke... isn't it? Like the kiddies going to Horde because of Blood Elf joke... I honestly hope you really do know what it is, there are 4-5 threads dedicated to it with the name in every other post.

Anyways to keep things on topic: Now that we know Syndrome is undetectable by not only Warden, but the new launcher as well, the only thing we really have to do now is wait for Faldo to complete the next Ver.patch. I feel like we are a mob of small children waiting impatiently for him to open his candy store... :jok:

Forgive me if I missed someone else mention this but you don't need the launcher to execute the game. I have repointed the desktop shortcut back to wow.exe and it simply bypasses the launcher.exe, no scan, no worries, simple.

Noone here has realy taken the launcher apart it seems...
What I have found tho is that it downloads scan.dll and loads this to scan the system. (This actually opening the user to attacks if someone or something has been able to change the scan.dll).
The scan.dll is almost identical to avast's dll for mailservers such as merak mailserver. This saying that Blizz probably is working with avast to check the client for regular viruses and Morphin changed files.

Making a _guess_ this means that Blizz now can ban and suspend ppl without taking into the equation that they might be infected as they should have been runing the launcher. So if you get caught and want to blame a virus make shure you blame one that is not known by the avast.dll.

Well anyway I do not see that it should be more or less dangerous to run the launcher, other than you being infected by a malicious scan.dll.

You dont have to use the Blizzard Launcher. I never do. I bypass it by just making a shortcut to WoW.exe and using that to launch. So if the big bad boogie man of a launcher scares you off, use some sense and decide not to use it. After every patch you will have to re-shortcut WoW.exe since the launcher wants to replace the icon on the desktop. It's no big deal. Stop worrying about something that can easily be fixxed.

yeh, with all seriousness i can't see blizzard banning you on a thoertical chance that you have a hack.. for all they know it could be just a regular virus lol, but Jadeheart makes a good point! DO NOT USE BLIZZARD LAUNCHER! IF YOUR WORRIED!
