MPC's New Server! [Archive]

To MPC Forum Users:

It took a while to get enough money to get a new server (ads generate little money because no one clicks them and *******s keep messing up our donations)....

However, we are now on a new server that is a massive upgrade over the old one. Twice the memory, and a CPU that crushes the old one. Not to mention 4x the HDD space with complete redundancy. We have a bigger backup server now as well, so we can make more frequent complete backups so we never have any problems.

We are saving up money still for the increased server expenses. If we do find that this setup isn't enough to handle the site, then we will eventually get another server so we can distribute the load between the two with Apache on one and MySQL on the other. However, MPC seems pretty fast right now, and we have 500+ people online, so hopefully this server can handle the load for a while.

Some of the forum modifications you may be familiar with aren't implemented yet. We may also be getting a new forum skin, but I don't know much about that yet. In time, all will become clear :p.

And since today (server upgrade) I haven't been getting those drenching ads anymore that pop up every time I move the mouse. It kind of kept me from getting on MPC for a while; now I will be more active.

We are aware of the broken attachments. We are trying our best to fix them now. If you make any new attachments before we fix the old one, there is a good chance the new attachments will be lost!

PLEASE DON'T MAKE NEW ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE THAT THEY WILL BE DELETED!

well, i got some spare money (lol its not *really* "spare") i will "invest" in MPC soon!

The ads didn't really bother me, I don't see the big deal of having one pop-up with the occasional browser crash (rarely). Since I don't have the money for donation I really can't complain about them either.

Anyone who is experiencing slow forum browsing at the moment, please keep in mind that we are still doing updates to the server and trying to fix problems. We are currently recompiling the entire search database, and we are downloading all the attachments from the old server. Both of these things cause lag on the server. However, even with both of them, this is still much faster... just wait until they are done :p

Compared to the old server, I think most of us ae happy that it is running this fast. But seeing MPC pages load so quickly I can't blink my eyes and look will complete my purpose in life ;)

well seing how the monthly server costs went up over 150% after this server change-over I think some ads will still have to stay, though I am looking for a way to get rid of the popups, and if I find anything else at all that can cover the server costs instead of the popups you can be 100% sure that i will go for that.

I was getting alot of bad popups last night.
popups that literally took up my whole screen and I couldnt close and when I looked at a page I got at least 200+ popups in under a second. They kept regenerating and then i had like 500+. Only killed it with Ctrl+Alt+Delete =/

I dunno guys I have the popups turned on for admin and everone and, personally, I've never seen regenerating popups, so if you were logged in I would suggest you report it as a multi-pop since those are not allowed by the ad company.

I only get at most one at a time...

If you ever get 500 regenerating popups, your pc would be dead. You wouldn't be able to ctrl+alt+del.....

I receive that WinFixer popup sometimes too. It's a popup that comes up almost outside of view. Then it asks whether you want to check Windows or not. Whether you select yes or no, you'll be redirected. Then you close the window using Alt-F4 and there will be another box saying you're at risk. If you press ok or cancel, you'll return to the page. The only way to close things permanently is to close that message pressing escape or using the X in the topcorner.

I've reported that popup 2 times now (don't have the link here), but it's still there. I'll report it again. Just letting you know what kind of popup they're talking about.

And I can't stress enough how great this new server is, I can't do anything else anymore while loading MPC! :D

Just in case anyone was wondering how the server is handling the load on the forums....

MPC currently has 722 users online. Load averages are under 3. The old server frequently showed load averages over 10 :p.

hmm, ur ads contain a Free Proxy Server, a bit sad if ur trying to ban MPC_abusers while they have an actual link in MPC to bypass the ip ban :D
