Slightly off-topic but it will be helpful.
Seems there is some increased interest in linux. I've never used it so can't offer much assistance. However would it be usful to create a separate sub-forum for it. If interest is there?

you probably downloaded the .iso file (those open up in winrar) just burn that file instead (as an image) or put all the files in that folder on a cd and burn them, then pop in the cd and it will start installing, you might need to make it so your cd boots up before your HD so it will start installing.
Make sure you have some free HD space that you can afford to partition for linux.
Personally I would recomend (rather than installing linux straight away) you download a bootable version of linux such as knoppix http://www.knoppix.org/ burn that on to a cd or dvd (depending on which version you download) pop it into your cd drive and boot from it, it will give you a chance to try out linux before actually installing it on your HD.
Knoppix doesn't install anything it runs directly from the CD and is a good was to recover a dead windows computer as well, so it's good to have. It has a bunch of stuff included in the distro as well so even though it's a bootable cd/dvd it's still very functional.
If you must install then I would suggest SuSe, Mandriva, or Ubuntu those are very nice distros (SuSe being my favorite) http://distrowatch.com/
