View Full Version : Remove the Ads on MPC!

Okay i know quite a few of you have been "unhappy" with the ads, so..... I'm doing what I can to compromise with you guys.

If you want the ads removed click the green link on top of the page (in the navbar) and subscribe. I know it costs money but we have to pay for the server so either we get the server money from the ads or we get them by subscriptions.

The system is automated and worked inthe tests I ran so it should not have problems, but if you experience a problem with not getting a subscription or something e-mail me (forward) the paypal receipt you get and I will set up your subscription manually.

Remember this will remove the ads for your account only, so you need to be logged in to not get the ads.

Oh and for unregistered users I am going to suggest you register and start posting then your ad frequency will drop by alot ;)

hopefully it kicks up the subscriber count, good idea luck, more people will see it.

Ads dont bug me, I click them to support yall, hopefully it will stress the importance of clicking the ads.

well it's just that lots of people SAY that they're willing to donate instead of seeing the ads so..... I thought why not make it so they can get something in return for "donating" as in the ads being removed.

In theory at least this should stop people from whinning all the time about the ads, after all you don't like the ads support MPC in a different way, you don't wanna pay money deal with the ads.

After all even admins see the ads so it's not like anyone is being descriminated against here ;)

yeah since you had that wierd thing with it requesting CC info and shit I finally got some time to register an account from college (different IP w00t :P) and ATM it works like a charm, at least for the 2 tests I ran, other than that...... noone is subscribing so.... I guess it was kinda pointless for me to do this :x

yes I agree but some people really do have THAT much of a problem so this is here for them, if we could run MPC ad free we would have but the server, the vbb licences, the themes, etc. they all cost money so it has to come from somewhere :x

i always pay stuff with my dad's credit card.and then give him the amount of money cash.but i'll be donating to mpc soon not so i don't see the ads anymore, cause my pop-up blocker is just fine :-)
well doesn't matter really, donate if you wish, maybe if all goes well I'll open up thew supporter tags again one of these days :x

You can block the ads by <of course you can, but you won't because we have to actually PAY for the server>

Diddle
17th February 2006, 00:47
Maybe.

We can block accounts in the ModCP too. Refusing to contribute to MPC and not viewing ads is bad enough, but trying to help people to achieve the same is worth a warning.

Am I the only one that sees the irony in this?

Blocking the accounts of people who don't contribute and don't want to view ads. People can come on here and tell others how to get around security features on video games that are designed to keep them free from something (cheating) but they can't come on here and tell people how to get around something that annoys them (pop-up ads).

It's kind of funny actually.

Oh and I really don't mind the ads, except for the one with the really loud retarded guy saying "CONGRATULATIONS!". Makes me want to punch him.

Yes, the talking ones are annoying.
I think it's not allowed and you can report it.

luck777jojo
17th February 2006, 20:50
yeah you probably are the only one that sees the irony in this.... after all we don't support warez here so we don't support fu*king game companies out of their money, so..... what the hell are you talking about.

The fact is if everyone blocks the ads we won't have money for the server and MPC won't be around much longer..... so deal with THAT

I had no problem subscribing and donating before that. MPC has offered me a lot of info and I have made a few net buddies as well. THanks for all the effort guys!!! Also browsing ad free it a definate bonus!!!

well yeah that was the point that's why this took a while to set up, I wanted to give donating members something back in return and this seemed like something they might like so.... ;)

I might not be subscribed but I try to make up for that by click on about 5 ads a day to support the site.
That being said: CAN YOU GET RID OF THAT TALKING ***** BEFORE I GO CRAZY???
"Congratulations and..." <-- Urge to kill...
;)

Oye... Anyway...
Click on a few ads to support the site and don't post how to get around them fools...
You get something from here?
Then do your part.

Say "Thanks" because the site is mostly free.
Can you say: "Appreciate".

well damn I get it here as well :P and trust me when I say this if google wasn't a bitch we'd be running google ads now and we wouldn't be having those damn popups.

as for the rest I will see what I can do about that popup, hard to get rid of it though since it's not doing anything against the TOS of the ad company, but I will see if I can block it somehow.

firefox keeps blocking the popups (or popunders) - and so does IE7...

i hardly get any ads here..sorry guys...i try to click on as many as i can (3-5 per visit roughly) but the popups doesn't affect me at all..IE7 actually bans them totally for me whereas firefox simply just tells me neatly that it's blocked a page from loading.

Would it be possible to have, as well as or instead of subcriptions, a donation system by which we could see, say projected server costs for this month, along with the amount donated so far? Personally, I would rather see us all working towards getting rid of ads for everyone. In this case, once server donations fulfilled needs, ads would be abolished and subscribers time would carry over to the next month.

Just pondering,

ATM we have all of 6 people who subscribed to ad free browsing..... that doesn't make living on donations look very promissing :x

You could offer other things to subscribers like a subscriber tag, small giveaways and such. However you could put the ads that talk to you like that one "look, look what you have won" back. Those are annoying as all heck :P
I know fileplanet has a huge subscription base now, possible to take a few genreal ideas from there.

This has nothing to do with postcount. Either buy a subscription or view the ads.

If you're logged in, then you will only encounter 1 popup every hour. When you're not logged in, you will receive a popup for every link you click. So register and log in! xD

even thought I'm pretty sure i never said that.... that sounds like a good idea, I might actually (if and when I have some free time) implement somekind of system that will remove the popups for "active" members or something like that, activity will be calculated on a weekly basis or something like that

I can't recall luck saying that either. But it sounds like a good idea indeed, but it will have to be based on postcount and activity, else all the leechers will have adfree MPC while contributing nothing and that wouldn't be such a good idea. ;)

KizZamP-
3rd March 2006, 23:35
well you shouldn't make it based on "online time",but maybe (IF possible) base it on the time that someone scrolls through a page, clicks on new section links ,etc.
and yes sudden death,i did see it and took a pic immediately :) though i have no photoshop :(

well they cover server costs and leave a bit in the bank in case of emergencies.

It's by far not worth it (trust me on this) but it's better than any other ad source we could get, and since as of now I have gotten exactly 6 people signing up and 1 of those 6 seems to have used a stolen account so paypal is already getting on my ass about that donations don't seem like a plausible idea ATM.

Personally I'm rather pissed that I made this subscription thing and already reciever 1 chargeback, but you can be sure whoever did this (I will check on monday) that you will get your ass beat to hell, I'm gonna fu*k you up bad and make an example out of you. @luck777jojo. Have you already taken care of them? You should make an announcement about it so people see that you arent to be f**ked with. I hope you got that guy good. You should report his IP to Paypal, and just anything you can to get him nailed.

Same here.

I have a feeling that those who gets popups per click aren't saving cookies, therefore, every click is like a new login.
