Hey guys, i was highly considering installing linux in, i have never ran this OS before but before i do i was wondering how do u install Linux and keep windows on the same PC. I am running a RAID setup, not the mirror one, they are one partition (465 gig) to be exact. Also is the linux xp version the same as the redhat version? Also when you download the linux version of americas army do they have special servers for the linux users or is it the same ? and also have they released the 2.6 version of aa for linux users? becasue i couldnt find a installation for it.

Thanks!~~:)

gday mircman.

If you got windows already installed, use partion magik and give yourself about 15gb free (more than enough) of unpartioned space. When u installed linux it will detect this free space and give u a option of installing in it. It will install a bootload which will let you select between operating systems on boot up. So yes windows and linux. I run both myself :)

No idea about the XP/redhat question, i use suse.

Lastly windows, linux and mac users all play on the same servers. You can play with windows on a linux server, or vice versa etc. AA 2.6 is out i think, its on the tracker forums for a download link.

in response to the different versions of the game, there is a seperate linux version that does need special servers. However, there was a thread either in this forum or the coding section that contained information about windows emulators, which allow you to play the windows version of the game. ill see if i can find a link and post it for you.

*EDIT* http://www.mpcforum.com/showthread.php?t=124973&page=2 the stuff you need starts on the third post down by no1uknow *EDIT*

linux plays on the same servers that windows, it just MUST be tha same version (same case windows)

inside the game linux & windows are the same... almost, linux FPS owns windows ;)

you would have to resize your existing partition. and then you can make a new partition. but don't make a new partition with partition magic. just go ahead and use whatever came with the Linux OS. Just make it install on an unused space.

and i hope by Redhat you do not mean Fedora. Fedora literallly is the crap of Redhat. So use Ubuntu.

I was running RedHat for 5 years and recently switched to Fedora Core 4.
Fedora is really crap.
1) default kernel is poorly compiled (static AGPART, low performace, often crashes)
2) Fedora cut out all multimedia applications (videoplayers, not mentined lame) for political correctness.
3) Updates are huge, over 3 GB and yum or up2date is not working (many repositories are down, can't update default kernel automatically).
etc...

Is Redhat Enterprise editions are better?
I am considering Ubuntu or Debian now; what is your experince with them?

there was a post in the coding section about knoppix bieng good for thsi kind of thing

as for your partition Mircman, ntfs is probably the best to go with as i've found its much more stable after any unexpected crashes. And i think that's been proved

So u install linux to a ntfs partion. You learn something everday </sarcasm> Im sure russian would find that quote amusing ;)
Sorry but linux doesnt run from ntfs, It can read ntfs and read write using paragon driver (which you have to pay for). Usually it installs to reiser etc. Mircman you have to make the 15gb "free space" and let linux create the partitons it needs when you run the setup program. If you need help post your questions in this thread and ill do my best to answer it.I dont have time to sit on msn and teach a beginner to use/fix linux problems sorry.

Beginners should really start out with something noob friendly like mandrake. Suse is a nice distro thats friendly to for beginners :)

You can install to a NTFS if the kernal has been modified to support it. Its not officaly support to do this but it works.
