They never hear of mysqldump ? I always back up the mysql servers that I admin once a night. The worst that can happen is you lose a day of data.

Some map files have explicit declaration of viewdistance. Berlin has for example viewDistance 200, El Alamein 500. Looks like theese maps were initially designed for this. May be EA is just planing to unlock the view distance in the upcoming addon....
OK, here is the method to unlock the thing:
There is a nice tool "Game Cheater ArtMoney" (http://www.artmoney.ru/). Not the real hacker tool, but still quite powerfull sniffer/editor to cheat games. You will need this or similar programm.
1) Start battlefield, set view distance to 100% in options
2) alt-tab back to windows and start "artmoney"
3) select process of battlefield: BF1942 (...blah...blah...)
4) Search for Exact Value 100 (type Custom Integer 4 Bytes, normal order) - you will get about 5000 results.
5) go back to battlefield and set view distance to, for example 77%
6) go back to "artmoney" and Sieve for Exact Value 77 of type Custom Integer 4 Bytes, normal order) - now you should get 1 result. if you get more than one result then repeat step 5-6 with another value
7) simply doubleklick this single result and voilá, now you can change the value of the viewdistance directly in battlefields memory.
8) now simply go back to battlefield and start multiplayer game, dont click "save" button in options or it will reset everything.
This will work only for one map-game. when you change server or map get changed you have to repeat everything (except restarting battlefield).
the procedure can be extremely simplified if you set in Options:
Search in adress range 02B00000 - 02BFFFFF
The value has variable adress but its adress is always in this range (my experience)
This all sounds complicated, it would be nice to make nice little resident programm that will do the job for us, but unfortunately I have not enough time for this at the moment. May be someone could help. Ive never written resident memory sniffers, some kind of hint where to get basic sources would be nice.
greetz.

It sounded like people were saying random threads were gone, not just the last few days. I have no idea as I have not really looked.
