Okay, this isn’t the whole internet on a floppy or even the whole internet on a hard drive but it’s still pretty interesting.
A company based in Bellevue, Washington called Webaroo is planning to release software which will let you “search” the internet while offline. All the information will be stored on your hard drive and you should be able to access the first 2 or so pages of search results (about 20 sites per search) with full graphics etc.
They’re planning on releasing this in “packages” based on a specific topic, and they say the “entire web” will require about 80GB of hard drive space, while each package separately will be much smaller (abut 256MB each).
They are planning on opening up their site tonight so I’m hoping we shall soon see if this is really a huge technological advance or just another crazy idea. Personally this just seems like an over glorified idea for an encyclopedia, since it will be limited by the “packs” they decide to release just like an encyclopedia is limited.
