I say photoshop but that's just because I'm used to it more and it seems to have more possibilities because of that.

photoshop is industry standard for alot of companies like sunrise, bandai, in manga and comic books ( liquid for instance) and in games too so if you mean for games/comic book art, 2/d stuff, fixed frames whatever, i'd say photoshop with lightwave plus 3dsmax. you can do some nice stuff combining them all.

But I think macromedia fireworks is cool too for web design in some aspects better, because it has things photoshop doesnt which is more print then FW. Photoshop has tons of tools/filters for making effects but fireworks uses both bitmap and vector graphics which make you have better tight control over many effects.

In the end i'd use photoshop for almost everything I personally do, but I would use both to web design and a couple other things. They both have alot of good things, and having alot of tools on hand isn't a bad thing.

forgot to mention imageready, incase some one throws that up here - Imageready is raster-based and fireworks is vector.

Must be only me who likes Fireworks then. I find Photoshop too 'bulky' for web graphics. However, i do use both very often

if you read my post I agreed on you as far as webdesign with it basically. I use both though and 3 other programs too. You're not alone though, I did agree. I think its better fro webpages but not stand alone. I think it's wise to use a few things with it, but inthe end ya fireworks would be good for webdesign.

theres some really nice books out there too on photoshop and Fireworks. More on PShop though, and the prices sometimes are high but its a wealth of professional knowledge, written by people who know how to word things correctly. Top notch stuff. Most of the tutorials I come across on the web for graphs are just cheap tricks written by Filter Kiddies. Not to say there isn't good one sout there but with all the bad trash, it's really hard and frustrating to go looking through everything, thats why I say books are nice. Nice to have a hardcopy volume ready, should you need it. Yes, I've seen those sites bigtimeStuff, where they skip steps or name options that dont exist in any version heh, its pretty funny.

I find that most of the books are written for total n00bs.
It's hard to find a decent book that will teach you all the cool stuff.

books are the best. you gotta research them online liek at amazon. some are written by some of the leading graphics people in the industry. thats some good stuff over say a tutorial online by for example - JoMomma's Tutoryal abut huw to mAk3 OwnAg3 Filt3rz.

They had a book in japan written by some of the capcom artists, that stuff is CUTTING EDGE for people like me.

ps - my buddy computer 83 (we go way back heh) i'll teach you stuff if yu need help. I know alot and what I dont know I can get possible answers on if you want. Pm me sometime your email or ym or icq number.

Thats cool about the capcom book. Did they show examples of how they made their video game art? Is it in Japanese text only though? If not i might have to check ebay or amazon out for a copy! I think I also saw a book out by either the image comics people or another comics firm on GD. :bunny:

Its japanese only, sorry. I guess as they state in the book it was based on the company handbooks. Definitely went out of print. Yes they give excellent examples of not only photoshop methods they use but also certain ways they weigh things on models, quite unique from some of the insane work arounds I've seen people attempt to pull off to fake secondary animations in quake 3 for instance. Someone used a little 'hack' doing a hidden head trick to get a full range of motion out of the hair and head. They changed how the model was spilt and created a miniture head inside the model itself allowing it to display right in game while using the upper.md3 as the head you saw on the model.

Anyway the quake 3 days of modelling for me are over. Book is valuable tool though. Its full color 851 pages of photoshop, max and lightwave techniques and a few other minor things on scanning etc

Photoshop is a very easy proggy, pretty simple...
But, Fireworks has many more options.
Especially when intergrated with Macromedia Studio Mx

DarkCloud, the phong is awesome, thx
