Imagine having computer memory so dense that a cubic centimeter contains 12.8 million gigabytes of information. Imagine an iPod playing music for 100 millennia without repeating a single song or a USB thumb-drive with room for 32.6 million full-length DVD movies. Now imagine if this could be achieved by combining a computing principle that was popular in the 1960s, a glass of water and wire three-billionths of a meter wide. Science fiction? Not exactly.

Mom: Why?
Luck: I can't download any more pr0n, my hard drive is full! I'm going crazy!!!! Whaaaaa, i need pr0n!!!!! *dies from heart attack*

Wouldn't it make it easier to steal data?

very very interesting.. makes you think does it?
some kid comes around and spit in your hard drive and it corrupts..
condensations (if it's an open air tank) reduces the size of your HDD (esp. if you live in a hot country)

to protect data, freeze the water. hahaha.. but molecules get compact and you might get some corruption. man.. quite unbelievable, truly.

Its going to be quite a challenge to make this type of storage as reliable as HDD storages..

I would prefer terrabyte hard drives rather than this mad idea ( unless they really do find a way to make it work ) ;)

Ha that would be great.

no need for P2P programs, just wait for it to rain outside and hope that some data got evaporated :D

on that note^^

some major sercurity issues, but lieking the sound of this.

rofl, some1 could just prise it open and drink some, if you did that wouldn't they get all the information, like they would know all the documents and files on your computer :)

yeah, it sounds a bit unbelievable but if its true then that is so cool, wouldn't be surprised if it wasnt released in my lifetime, usually the US and other countries military use top computer stuff years before it is publicly released, could happen here unless the military already have it

I want a 12.8 petabyte HDD :'(

[yes 12,800,00GB = 12.8PB, link (http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/)]

Im not impressed. Over 30 years ago they had computers so fast and powerful, the computers were able to trace and record whenever they heard simple words like bomb, terrorist, drugs, etc... Over any type of line anywhere in the world. I wonder what they are doing now.
People have been imprisoned and even killed for inventing a forever free source of energy.
Government controls what they want us to have.

wow, that is quite hard to believe. If that is true and it does become available to the public, water is going to become much more valuable. lol, $200 for a glass of water at a resturant. I'm going to stock up on it now. *runs outside to put out some garbage cans to catch the rain* lmao...

i dont know..... even if you keep it in a box....
water seems to be a too delicate element to use...
a little shake.. a little air bubble.. dust.. damn... :x

as far as I understood water will only be used for stabelising the nano material that will store the information, nothing will actually be stored in the water itself.

not that surprising .. as our technology advances our storage and storage use also increases... remember the times when movies were tiny and hard drives were like 2 gigs max? loll:rambo:

Good article. Sounds quite interesting, I hope they go somewhere with this, it would be cool to have close to all my dvd/movie collection onto one DVD (rather than, very very many hdd's)...

Kookie
26th July 2006, 11:18
Erm.. We'd need a new name... Hence HDD is Hard Disk Drive... What would this be?
H^2OD?
For you kids who don't know.. H2O = Water
Therefore Water Drive

Not to mention gas prices... Water prices are gonna sky rocket aswell... First they starting working on hydrogen vehicles...

And now data storage...

I guess meth value would go up :P

this has been done already i've herd of this when they were talking about some 7 crystal skulls where to be found and only 4 of them have been found and it is said that the world or life's history is stored on them and when we find all 7 we will be granted this history and knowledge. sorry i dont have a link but it was on TV "History channel lol"

Example: Tesla's work on wireless energy etc. and um...DEATHRAY! woot
btw i want my hdd cherry flavored
you could even flush your hdd down the toilet and send pr0n to your neighbors house on the other side of the pipes o.o;
-edit- oooh a new kind of internet...wet-net

dude that be insane since we are made out of watter we can like record data on ur arm then then plug somethign in ur arm and play what ever u got on there. now they only need to make a screen and a processor out of water. everyone sits in jail and plays games.

Hmm...

I'm thinking. Right now, for super computing, you would need 2 bits for every bit in order to have cubits.(I think...I'm not big in this area.). So that means n*2 where n is the number of bits you want. This gets to HUGE amounts in a very short time.

If you used this type of storage with supercomputing...it wouldb become a posibility, wouldn't it?

Just a thought,
Macpunk

Weedh3ad, I totaly agree with you, Yeah everybody gets killed or fined or imprisoned when they make energy free invention...Why? They need gas to support their economy, Without gas whole usa would go downwards(no offence against americans) Also, A dutchman made 80gigs flash cards and the day when it was going to be licencced and released he got killed/died ...And the technology is never found..

Ventrue05
7th September 2006, 11:28
80gigs? never her of such a story give some back up to that because i dont beleave you.

That would have been cool tho. I'm downloading a complete high-quality movie.... oh wait i'm done! :O
The download limit would be like.... 100 megs and u'd say oh no problem i could go a year without downloading 100 megs!! Oh utopia :D

On the note of people getting killed, my dad was telling me that about 40 or so years ago his friend at the time made a motorbike that ran on water 100% but got bought out by the petrol companies where they then destroyed all the documents, and stopping him from releasing it. I guess if he didnt comply he would have just been killed as well.

dM
12th September 2006, 22:30
that friend of his didnt get killed. he never existed. infact, his "water motorbike" was just a squirt gun with wheels.

Lol, if my house is next to a lake, i'll just "connect" the lake to my laptop and i'll have like 2392473297325932739572395732392759375735295732 TB of space xD

frogger
21st January 2007, 17:04
I see the problem in accessing the data. How do you want to access a certain address in a cube of water? I mean water is moving all the time because of temperature differences etc. so one bit isn't at the same place all the time.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm laughing my ass off at this.

Its not stored in the water!! Water is used because it is capable of inducing a dipole, seeing as its a polar molecule.
This nano material needs stabalising so a fractional amount of water will be used to simple induce dipoles on the material.

So A) You cant drink it...
B) It is as secure/insecure as any hard drive.
C) It would be sealed, no condensation, + on the chance that you manage to let your computer freeze (WTF?) it might contain some sort of anti-freeze liquid (unlikely).
