Within the next few days MPC might be moved so I am asking right now for all of you to update your local DNS cache if it seems that MPC is down or if you're getting an error page.
To update your local DNS cache please do the following in Windows XP:
1. Start -> Run
2. type in "cmd" and press enter
3. You will get a DOS command prompt
4. Enter "ipconfig /flushdns"
That should be it for the windows xp local DNS cache. Some firewalls (such as Outpost) also have DNS chaches enabled, to fix that just go on IRC and someone will help if you can't do it yourself.

we're on a dedicated server now already, but that is not the question here, it is not important why or how or where we're moving, all that is important is that you guys update your dns cache if you get an error page within the next few days.

No, cache is only meant to make things go faster if you do/need them multiple times. If a DNS is cached it means it doesn't have to speak with a DNS server so much anymore so it will go faster. If you clear your cache, it will be re-cached the first time you visit the site again. So if you do it now, that will be no garantuee that MPC will work after it's moved. It will only have any effect when you do it when you're having problems.

When you hit enter after typing in www.mpcforum.com, your computer will contact a DNS server to resolve the IP that belongs to that address. Your computer will then cache that IP thinking it belongs forever to that address. When the IP of MPCForum.com changes, your computer will still try to connect to the old IP, because that was cached. It has to contact the DNS server again to get the right IP. That's why you have to flush your DNSCache.
Note that this problem will only occur when something goes wrong. I usually don't have any problems when a site changes IP.

i get it, thanks diddle, so at the moment your ip is stored but when you change ip it might not work no longer, so clearing the dns cache gets rid of the old one and i'm assigned the new one
got it
thanks

Most skript kiddies just port flood sites. MPC is being port flooded almost constantly... but usually it makes no difference, since their IP's can just be blocked and their attacks averted.

Why dont you make a list publicly avalible of the affending IP's? Then people can get back at them and ping them!

Because if we did publish all those IP's all the time and ask for retaliation, then we would be on the same level as they are. We don't retaliate, because we're better then them.

Unless it goes to an extreme, as it did about a week ago, IP's will not be posted for the public.

people threaten legal action against groups like the ***** ALL the time, they have hundreds of threat threads on their forums. But they really dont care they mock the person threatening. Legal action is never taken..
