I know for sure they have some Ozzy Osborne, as well as some latin-like music from the 50's 60's also they have some rap, etc. etc. just the whole 80's feel the music is pretty cool actually, very few bad songs, and even the Michael Jackson one is okay, it's one of the songs he did when he was still black so it was pretty good ;)

hey I listen to everything too. There is no phase at all. Phase would mean I didn't know myself like I thought and thus changed my mind, and I definitely do know myself, and what music I love. I prefer a certain type of anything from music to artists, to pencil lead or lipstick brands. I may listen and like one type over other types, but I guarantee my collection is beyond what anyone stereotypes me as. Goth(real goth not mtv wanna-be shit) though, i've been listening since I was little. It is also the style of music my band plays and we released alot of cds. I'm not saying we are the best, but we have expanded with disc to disc, and get good bookings even if its localized. It's just my thing. Don't be so quick -anyone- to judge me, you would be quite surprised. I can play any type of music if I wanted to.

lol Yah your right its been covered by a whole lot of bands. I agree the Vanessa Carlton cover was rather unfortunate. But its bound to happen with a song as influential as that. REM, Face to Face, and Pearl Jam have done excellent covers of it though. Ive got a few supposedly goth covers of it but they dont have a band name so I dont know if youd think they are real goth bands or not. Your obvioulsy alot more into goth than me so i wont make a call on that but they do sound pretty professional. What about "paint it black" do you not like? honestly, I don't think I really like that song bigtimestuff. I don't know, just doesn't do it for me. I can name about 50 or more Japanese singers that I like that you won't. It is just where I grew up compaired to where you did. I like a ton of music, more cds, vinyl(for collectors reasons) then you can imagine. I ah just prefer goth. It's what my band plays, what I like most. Not into many male bands/singers , but there are a few in all styles of music I do like. I'm more into female leads.
Oh I hope you weren't thinking of Gob, as a goth band, which they arent, and they did a cover of paint it black, think it was that version in stir of echoes, which the movie I actually liked kinda,
One goth band that did do it that I know off the top of my head was Inkubus Sukkubus. It's on a goth compliation I have. I know there's alot of other bands too, I don't remember though. I tend to stir clear of covers - completely.

Oh yah thats it, Inkubus Sukkubus. Yah LoL first i thought it said Incubus as the name as a joke. But yah thats cool, the Stones dont do it for everybody especially if your not into male singers. But dont be so so quick to say i wouldnt like Japanese singers, im very open to different music too. Nowadays the more different the better. I like to stray away from the mainstream as completely as possible, unless something made it there on actual merit. Which is rare. I like to stick to the underground stuff, which is why I like this site so much:)

don't like em. I think you meant vanessa carlton. She puts cds out when Michelle Branch is in downtime with nothing new. I swear like so many movie trailers when I went to see Matrix or Bruce Almighty had either of those two girls songs playing in the background. Usually was the romantic comedies or cartoons. In japan we have well respected grammy winners making music for anime, but in america it's pop stars.
oh yeah I saw the early sneak preview of Italian Job, it was good. It was like a cross between ocean's eleven and the score(which also had ed norton by coincidence).

Machiko, so what do you think of Namie Amuro? Female and J-Pop. Not sure if you're into Japanese Main-stream bands though.
The station that I listen to mostly is Q101, but you probably dislike it since its mainstream. But I like it cause it has a mixed flavor of all types of music ranging from rap to whatever.
If you loved Oceans Eleven, then you must really like Formula 51. That was a great movie. Movies with the oceans eleven style story design especially the well thought out movies are my favorite style.

BigTimeStuff - No I saw a sneak preview of the entire movie. That's a one week or more special screening , usually critics go to those. They have them all the time here. Like Hulk(cracked out shrek), which I won't see anyway, has there's either this weekend or next. I can tell you the ending and ruin it for you if you want? There is one scene where Mark Wahlberg is explaing how each one of them got into the "stealing" business. I think this scene was supposed to be funny, and they did flashbacks, but it wasn't all that funny. Especially how he knocked some kid down and picked his pocket. oookay heh. Other then that the rest of the movie is cool. The Napster is funny, but I won't tell you about that. You'll see it. Also Ed Norton, who I like alot, I hated alot in this movie. WHich proves he is a good actor, because he played a real *******, very well.
Darkcloud - Namie Amuro is good. Mainstream out the there isn't like it is out here. Yeah they did play the popular american bands and those were the ones I hated. I like too many bands. Malice Mizer was like the incarnate of London After Midnight, accept Mana looks like a real girl, which is kinda cool if you like both heh. Yoko Kanno is one of my favorites, but she does collaborations with other bands/singers from american to russian. Most of the time there is japanese roots in there, and the overall sound is usually that but they lyrics can go from english to japanese, or be just neglish or japanese or go from english to japanese to russian, especially Inner Universe.

I doubted you would like Yoko Ono, I think shes a loon but yah never know. Her contributaions to all the Beatles albums were actually very significant though. She influenced Lennon alot and they shared many of the same idealogies of peace and unity which were exhibited on the albums. Course alot of people are gonna hate on her now for how much she continues to profit from her connection to the band. I only like her music for dancing to. I like the Beatles alot more.

i'm not going to say anything. I don't want any hate pms. Let me just say, I like what I like. If a song moves me or touches me deep, or I can relate to it, or I feel any ounce of emotions I like it. If it doesn't - I don't, regardless of who they might be.

27th May 2003, 07:34
hehe that might be a good idea, there are a lot of rabid Beatles Fans out there they would probalby sacrifice thier life for the band. You wont get any hate mail from me though. I just think a few of thier songs are beautiful ( ie: mother mary). My policy on hating(and not just joking) is that I dont do it, and if someone does it to me ill just call them out on it and make them look silly cause most peole think haters suk. I like to let everyone have their own opinions but to be able to talk and reconsider them as well as mine. Some fans will take it too far though if I say one thing bad about thier band, even if it was a misunderstanding or light hearted. I think they jsut get very defensive because they actually like that band so much and they want to stand up for it even if it wasnt necessary. Its nothin new. Ive dont it before too. Just as long as they dont try to carry a grudge out to far it doesnt bother me too much.

@Machiko:
Gackt
+Miserable
Malice Mizer
+Kyomu No Chuu De No Yuugi Dais
+The illuminati
+Transylvania
A lot of them sound like something I would hear it from a japanime or final fantasy
Miserable doesn't sound too mizerable.
Machiko
27th May 2003, 09:01
well yes they use real bands in anime. You make it sound like its a step down when its a step up in Japan to be considered. Final Fantasy uses a chinese singer, Faye Wong - Eyes on You.
Malice Mizers best songs without question I think are Beast of Blood, Baptism of Blood and Color Me Blood Red.
Those other two bands younamed are NOT goth. Remind me never to go to a goth club with you. Zombie has some credibility even though they won't play him but if you mentioned korn, they'd kill you. it would be on the news.

there are no mainstream goth bands really, just bands that are mainstream that want to be called goth. Or perhaps time magazine, newsweek, mtv and channel 7 news label them as goth because they don't know ****ing shit about the music.
Like back when that Columbine thing happened, I read the articles, and I saw what the other media had to say, and they called music those guys listened to goth. They brought the word up so many times, like they were so sure, but it was all a joke. There was no goth. Also just because someone dresses in black, doesnt make them a goth or anything. That kind of mentality would mean if I dressed up in a cops uniform or in a firefighters gear that would automatically make me one. Imagine though, if I killed 20 people with a cop uniform on, or even say dressed totally preppy before I did it, they wouldn't go on a witchhunt against cops and preps. What I wore woldn't be a factor. If I wore my normal clothes and killed 20 people, they would write articles forever about goth and how evil it is and all kinds of things. After I was dead, they would probably say "she may have been influenced by bands like Marlyn Manson" or whatever other NON GOTHIC lame bands that the media labels as goth that I don't listent to, hate and in reality are not goth at all (thankfully). It makes me mad just thinking about it.

What would you do if your band was offered a mulitmillion dollar record contract and the chance to be on MTV? Heh by the way im not a manson fan but I really like the way "beautiful people" sounds even though i dont relate to the lyrics. And yes anyone who voted pop should be shot, but first forced to have multiple colonoscopies by the guys from Deliverence.

I know that Manson's not pop. Pop is like N'Sync, and other shitty bands. Manson might be Death Metal.

yes I.S. is goth. I refuse to accept manson as anything but pop. It's not that manson sold out or whatever, its more how he parades around taking elements from a genre of music that is not his own. I think a band can be popular but have some dignity for who they were, and mostly keep their souls if you know what I mean. I don't classify "selling-out" as making tons of money, more of a spiritual sell-out. So you can front yourself for something postitive, remain true to yourself still and make tons of cash, or you can sign a deal with the lamer wanna-be goth store Hot Topic, and then go tour with their damn logo up on stage behind you and make money.
I'm no fan of Rob Zombie, but I read a bio of him. He has crossed over on levels but he isn't pretending he's anything he's not and he isn't taking those corporate deals that are drenched in total disgusting mainstream pop(ular) appeal -[ not pop the music style].
From my little place, in the near back of the line of where my band performs, I have met alot of the goth bands that I admire, talked to at shows I played...they are friendly and not changing for the money. They hang out like normal people and definitely are down to earth. Alot of them have other outlets they make a ton of money in too, unrelated to music. One band I know from LA, they make music for something else under a different name and it's not even for any extremely popular medium. They do that as stand alone, leaving the goth thing as it should be. One person I know owns a halloween chain of haunted houses, and does that for the majority of their money, totally seperate from the music. A guy I know who lives right near me, has performed at goth clubs all over the world, runs an adult internet site to make most of his money, and I think he invests too in alot. As far as his band goes - has kept it as is for years, and trust me I mean "as is" on every level, even his clothing, which needs a style revision in my opinion. I myself am struggling with my band but definitely not money wise. I don't do it for the money and my true goals in life are all revolving around putting out my manga someday. I have my other life where I have my money, how else could I afford to set up an entire studio in my basement and produce my own cds even if I do it in a tiny amount of units?
Another band that I'm not totally into anymore because the politics became center-stage for their song writing(although last cd wasn't too badly saturated in that) is KMFDM. They haven't sold out in the spiritual sell-out sense I was talking about before. They have been featured on tons of soundtracks and done remixes up the ass for bands, but they definitely keep it low key, the same as they have always been since I saw them live, and I respect that.
So basically what I am saying is making money isn't bad. Money can lead to financial freedom, and there's nothing wrong with that. I mean selling-out in a deeper more spiritual essence. I'm sure you know what I mean. It happens in different ways to authors, artists, musicians, actors, movie francises (ie batman to name one of like 10 I can think of) and even game companies - or to be precise, certain game developers - producers.

hay thats pretty deep. I understand what you meant by pop now. It is unfortunate when bands who have alot of talent and individual vision sell out to waht the public opinion wants. I always retain the most respect for bands that uphold thier opinions no matter how unpopular they are or how much hell they get for them.

Personally I havnt had much of a chance to listen to goth. If you could put together a top 10 list of goth songs to listen too what would it be?
Machiko
28th May 2003, 05:18
too hard to say. There's the new people getting into goth top 10 that kind of makes getting into what the music is about, a little easier, but some goths won't admit they ever liked those bands. Then there is the true top 10 that most people who haven't matured with the music along the way, probably won't appreciate as much.
Vampyre Erotica is ok. I'm not a huge fan of Inkubus Sukkubus. I have appreciation for the older bands, don't get me wrong, but their music is too old sounding. Try Witch Hunt by them btw. Was a popular song in 1995. I didn't like it but... you might.

Anybody heard Finch yet? My money says they blow up big soon. Also been listening to alot of Silver Chair and Dead Kennedy's recently. For Metal heads check out Neurosis's

I could "cough up" a top 200 plus list with all kinds of music, but I really don't want those names posted up here. I know that's silly but 95.3% of the bands already listed through-out this thread...well....forget it. Malice Mizer is just a good example of gothic j-rock, in Japan I saw them live a few times, and they are good. If you know nothing about the band, chances are you might grab some of the songs that sucked since they did switch lead singers alot. There was one specific time in the bands history where they were perfect, as I mentioned. Also the last stuff they did /current isn't so bad. I don't like that I name one name though and people jump on that as the total sum of every japanese band, or bands in general that I listen to because it isn't true. Malice Mizer is in the 13% ..if that, of what I truely like. If I ever get my site up that has NOTHING to do with cheating, and is all game design, 3d/2d design, and Music and things I like (I am sure you can imagine), then I can start talking out more about this.

the 2nd disc for the reloaded sountrack is better. I don't like many of the bands on the 1st disc, just maybe 2. As for POD, i don't hate or like the music...sounds nothing like the style I like, i don't care the style/origins/politics behind it - my ears just don't like it. It doesn't speak to my soul, my life, my experiences, my interests. Plus the lead singer is male - strike one for me. Don't like his voice, strike two.

I just like the whole second disk. Don Davis is a awesome composer an under-rated, he is just as good as John Williams, plus he experiements, with the Roland S- 760 Samplers, and synths. He's like the Fincher of composers. Throw in Juno Reactor, and it's really good.
if you watched the reloaded stuff on Sci-Fi Channel, they showed his set-up. It's really nice.

He must have a very huge studio to be able to do that much stuff. I'm betting you probably got a studio just as big as his or even bigger.
Machiko
11th June 2003, 02:03
well my studio is diferent. He's a different type of musician. I have the same types of Midi modules and computer software I am pretty sure he uses the same. Alot of the good studios seem to use basically the same setup. Outboard same too probably or close. I also am a goth band, leaning towards industrial lately. I also play violin, and use that in some songs. Depends. Trust me it sounds cool and has that feel, I dare not say anything to stereotype myself.

I won’t take it for granted
So I learn from my mistakes
It’s beyond my control, sometimes it’s best to let go
Whatever happens in this lifetime
So I trust in love
You have given me peace of mind
chorus:
I feel so alive for the very first time
I can’t deny you
I feel so alive
I feel so alive for the very first time
And I think I can fly
Sunshine upon my face
A new song for me to sing
Tell the world how I feel inside
Even though it might cost me everything
Now that I know this, so beyond, I can’t hold this
I can never turn my back away
Now that I’ve seen you
I can never look away
[chorus]
[bridge:]
Now that I know you (I could never turn my back away)
Now that I see you (I could never look away)
Now that I know you (I could never turn my back away)
Now that I see you (I believe no matter what they say)
[chorus x 2]"
you really have to try hard to find christian references even in this though. Though do carry a subtle christian message I think, but nothing so blatant as the gung ho halleluiah guys you see on infomercials. I think the "you" they are speaking of in this song could mean god, but its impossible to say unless they told you. I didnt really like this song musically as much as Youth but either way I think the lyrics are positive, uplifing.

Back on topic: What does everyone have against country music? Whenever people list the music they listen to, there are frequently people that say "anything but country." What is so bad about it? I admit that its not very high on my list, but there are definatly lower forms of art then country music. There was 1 country group from russia that I actually do like, they were featured on 60 min, time magazine, and won an Oscar<-i think it was an oscar.... what is so offensive about country music?

PAS = Apocalypse
I just dont like country, I prefer music that is louder, such as metal, or hard rock. I dont really care about lyrics, but the music is a necessity. Im into bands that aren't making songs for the money or publicity, but they are more into making the music just for making the music. I know that sounds gh3y, but Its what I actually believe.

They are talking about movie themes. There are great themes out there for movies, and its good to see them get recognition ;)
Just wondering here, and this might a little off of the topic of music, but since you brought up the IPod, anyone know some good portable mp3 players with hard drives that aren't too expensive? Right now Im looking at the Creative Zen NX or w/e its called, but I need a hundred more dollars to get it.
And lets get off the topic of downloading music unless its something like buymusic.com because just downloading it is illegal, no matter how much anyone cares about it.

Well hrm... prices on the Nomad Zen are about $250 for a new 20 gb, and $450 for a 60gb right? And prices for 10 gb iPod are about $250 and $400 for the 30gb, are making a good choice not to get an iPod.
But if you look at the quality and not just the storage space: I LOVE my iPod, it is about 1/3 the wieght of the Zen, and 1/2 the sq cm, and its sleak, fast, easy to use, has games, flexibility of files played, battery life is 8hours, recharges in 4, and would you personally ever use all ten gigs? I mean... I havent filled up all 10 of mine yet, and none of my friends have filled up theirs either. Though the iPod is nice, if I was the one that was buying it (i got it as a present) I woulda gotten something a little cheaper.
Since there is more than 1 nomad zen, would you mind telling me which one u wanted... cause I dont know exactly what your price range is. If I knew it I could give you some other alternatives.
If your in the Nomad Zen 20gb price range then:
The Neo would be an alternative: it holds 30gb of music, costs ~$225, linux/windows, usb 2.0, battery life is 3 hours, mp3 and mp2 files.
--==[][All Prices Mentioned are Discount Prices][]==--
Felix
3rd August 2003, 19:21

Yah that mission impossible theme is awesome. For MP3 players i have an i-river 1fp 180t. Dont ask me were they came up with that name. Its cheapy, holds about 128 mbs. Since its small though i can take it running and biking with me. Think it only cost about 50-75$.

--------- Looks:--X---------- <<-- My preference

what would be cool is if they could make just a set of headphones with an antennae to your home computer and you could play anything on there. or too like a sattelite where people store all thier stuff.
Felix
4th August 2003, 15:23
Ermm..the PC IPod goes up to 30 gigs.
ebay sucks for buying mp3 players and stuff, I would much rather buy.com or the companys website. (ex. creative.com)
I was looking at that type of mp3 player bigtimestuff, but I want one that has a hard drive so I wont be needing to look for more space etc. I can just put it all on one hard drive.
Ron1n: Zens are alot better than the IPod. Wtf you talking about OS? I dont need any apple OS, I dont have an apple. Size, they are almost the same size, but the zen is fine for me. The zen is alot cheaper, and would definitly be my choice over the IPod anyday. Looks is complete bullshit, no offense. Would you rather something that had 20 gigs and was "ugly", although I dont think it is, and $249 then something thats 20 gigs, "pretty", and $300? Thats 50 bucks just for the looks.
And with the size, the Nomad Zen NX is 4.4" x 3" x 0.86" while the 15 gig IPod is 4.1 by 2.4 by 0.62 inches and the 30 gig IPod is 4.1 by 2.4 by 0.73 inches. Are those .13"s going to make a difference?
[edit] Just looking at the stats now, and the 10 gig IPod is 300 dollars, the 20 gig Zen, double the space, is $250. Zen anyday.
Ronin
4th August 2003, 19:40
OS: Speed + ease of use. The iPod can transfer an entire album in under 10 seconds, thats 1 second per song. I was talking about the software. Also, iPod can play MP2, MP3, WAV, and AIFF. As far as I know, the Zen only plays MP2/3. Also, the iPod holds contacts, notes, has a calender, and u can play games.
Cost: The person that bought my iPod got it for 239.99, not 299.99.
Storage; As i said, do u really need all 20 gigs?
U keep saying its "better", but how about u just say holds more.
[edit] are u sure u converted from mm to inches correctly? whats the conversion rate (mm per inch)
[[Edit 2]] how about talking about music on this thread, and making a new topic if u wanna talk about mp3 players

Metallica is very leet. They have been around so long and are still one of the most popular bands. They have been around about 20 years now, and people still listen to them religiously? They have to be good for that.

Id have to say i admire the supporters of mettalica who stayed with them even though alot of thier "fair" weather fans were giving out on them. You could tell they went through alot of band problems but they stayed down to earth and dealt with it which is all you can ask. Thier were defenitly some changes in thier music, but that was just beacase they were going through changes in thier life. At least they were keeping it real. I think alot of people can actually relate to the anger and problems thier trying to solve on thier new album. Its not always fun and games. I dont know if thier new album that had such mixed reviews is great or not but its definetly solid rock music.
