What is the best firewall around?

well I'd have to say a hardware firewall is the best you can get ;)

yeah, but I already have one on my router NAT. But it really isn't doing much cause a friend of mine was still able to get my IP from a hacked up messenger.

a router isn't exactly a hardware firewall.... a hardware firewall is another seperate computer, there was a really good firewall that wooolF mentioned some time ago.... I can't remember the name of it at this time though.... if I do I'll mention it here or perhaps someone else remembers the name of it... prehaps wooolF himself or hebe, or someone else ;)

-------edit---------

I think this is it I found the link after searching my favorites for several minutes: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/ I'm not 100% sure that that's the one but I'm pretty sure still ;)

I wouls suggest SmoothWall for the hardware solution (*nix)
And Agnitum Outpost for the soft based firewall (for winblows users, cause *nix users knwo how to protect their boxes as rule, hehe)

My router has a built in firewall and that way I don't have to worry about resource drag. Are there any cons to using only a router with built in firewall?

Download "Sygate Personal Firewall" free from their website here:
http://soho.sygate.com/default.htm

ot use another firwall which many thinks is the best one called "Zonealarm"

yes it is not as safe as a hardware firewall.... however it is probably about the same as a mediocre software firewall. That's all I can come up with.

What about ZoneAlarm? Thats a very popular software firewall

ZoneAlarm isn't that bad. But as a tech I have seen it break a lot of systems. And for some reason it doesn't like to uninstall. Believe me you don't want to have todo a manual uninstall of that bad boy! But if anyone ever does... let me know, I'll tell you how.

Im not good at firewalls but my friend says noone is secure.

luck777jojo
8th April 2003, 03:09
well duh ofcourse noone is secure but.... being a pacifist and not even having some sort of protection is just *****ic.... a superhacker isn't going to hack your system just for fun and even a simple firewall can stop the script kiddies who make up 99% of the hackers.

I have three firewalls running. NAT, BlackIce and Zone Alarm. I don't know if NAT counts but whatever.

Its not really a draw back but blackice has served me well so far. It protected me against a lot of horrible attacks that would've screwed me over. Another benefit to blackice is that it show's the attacker's IP and says whether or not ther person used a proxy :p

this is an example of what blackice tells me about the attacker:

IP: 203.79.123.235
Node: DAVESFAMILY
Group: MSHOME
MAC: 005345000000
DNS: 203-79-123-235.adsl.paradise.net.nz

hmmm that actually does look pretty nice but.... don't leave it alone.... you might want to get another firewall just incase BlackIce fails.... and that happens to even the best... so having a backup is always good ;)

Linksys firewall? are you talking about NAT on your router?

zonealarm is ok..... i use norton internet security... has the virus scanner and firewall
all-in-one.

wooolF[RM]
15th May 2003, 02:49
zonealarm is a joke :D it's just for 9y.o. newbies who think they are unhackable with it... fishy interface with no possibilities to make any pro settings/filters and that's it... bah, I could write 2 pages more about this piece of software if u can call it so... but I wont...

btw, same goes to BlackIce... no offence... go to google, search for some tests of firewalls and see how BAD BlackIce actually is...

whatever, I still stay on my opinion stated earlier in this thread

Agnitum is reasonable then?

DarkCloud

Well I am a web designer and have a hosting and ISP service. I ran about everything software wise. And I prefer Sygate over the rest... Hardware is still better but software I'd go SYGATE

(Cheap plug for Sygate, Where's my paid endorsment?)

Blackice isnt a firewall is it? Its just some network analyzer and it doesnt actually stop a hacker. Could be wrong though

Using ZoneAlarm or BlackICE... Hmm.. Well, those of you who are, good night and good luck... Both have been penetrated once again... The power in those firewalls is ridiculous, do not bother getting them... They are only powerful to the weak minds that consider themselves unhackable.. They offer limited protection..
