miranda! ( ICQ + MSN + AIM in one or just ICQ with MSN or ICQ + AIM or just AIM or just MSN etc etc etc (you can combine it yourself) )
see screenshot here : http://web1.server126.notraffic.de/wooolf/miranda/miranda.gif

Lol, nice desktop. Isn't that like trillian?
wooolF[RM]
27th April 2003, 16:36
uhm... trillian takes many protocols in one... miranda does same but...
miranda = open source
miranda = +250 plugins
miranda = free!
miranda = your own feel and look ( skins, icons, plugins, look etc )
miranda = ICQ (was started as clone of ICQ) MSN AIM NETSEND IRC YAHOO and more
and my *personal humble* opinion : Trillian SUX :)
Felix

I agree, it does suck :)

Where could an innocent bystander in this debate pick up a safe copy of Miranda then, and how big is it?
cheers

And my vote goes to Miranda :p

I have downloaded the plugin for msn, but no matter where I putt the *.dll, it never works... how do I 'activate it' and get Miranda to use msn aswell?

29th April 2003, 01:16
the only thing I didn't like about this was it didn't import my ICQ list to it. So I uninstalled it the moment I tried entering it through my ICQ number. Its no good if I have to get everyone's approval again.
wooolF[RM]
29th April 2003, 03:00
@ Jacobus > u put it into plugins folder, should be activated automatically...
@ DarkCloud > ICQ list? lol, newest ICQ store all of their contacts on the server, so just load up miranda and all of the contacts will be loaded from the server automatically... and if u use old version of ICQ that stores all of the info in the dat file, then there's a plugin for you that will do the job (import)... look for it at the official website...
DarkCloud
29th April 2003, 04:18
I activated Miranda and it didn't import my list :(
Jacobus
29th April 2003, 09:25
I'v put the plug in, and when I run Miranda, and go into options>Plugins, it's there, but how do I use msn through it, it seems to only be running ICQ at the moment
Da BuzZ
29th April 2003, 09:33
You need to put the plugins in the <Miranda IM>\plugins\ folder :)
--------------------------------------------------------------
OMG... some1 voted AIM... /me looks @ wooolF[RM] :p
Jacobus
29th April 2003, 09:43
I did Da_BuzZ, I put the zipped up files in there, ASWELL AS the extracted *.dll file for msn. They are in the Miranda IM Plugins folder, and I can see them in Options>Plugins, so it is there ready to be used, just I cant seem to use msn through it! It just loads up, asks me to import some contact files for ICQ (I only want to use Msn and Aim not icq really), then when I cancel that, gives me the main screen .... FOR ICQ....
how do you use msn through Miranda?
luck777jojo
29th April 2003, 09:58
ok go into options....and in the bottom under "network" you'll see MSN click t and make sure you put in you MSN login/pass then hit apply and restart miranda.
Jacobus
29th April 2003, 15:18
ok thanx for the help... I found it, Ill just have to fiddle a bit ;)
note - does running msn mode in Miranda, look any different to the icq part? should anything change?
I added a friend's email address in the msn find users part to add to my contact list, and it found him and I added him, but wen he goes on MSN, he doesnt appear online!
wooolF[RM]
29th April 2003, 16:30
works fine here :) no idea actually...
and no, it should not change the look of miranda except for the user icons ( if u have default icons )
DarkCloud
29th April 2003, 20:34
hmm... Do I need a module to be able to run ICQ on miranda?
Jacobus
29th April 2003, 20:35

no idea actually...
Dont worry... Im sure I'll get it, if I have no luck, I guess I could look for instructions on the site!

miranda is a clone of ICQ (read IT IS ICQ)...
all those MSN AIM YAHOO etc are just some plugins...
Jacobus
30th April 2003, 09:26
Is there anything to get msn within Miranda to check your hotmail inbox, like the real msn does?
luck777jojo
30th April 2003, 09:52
yes there's a plugin on the main website called "popup" by HRK, just install that, it works and it also lets some other plugins work ;)
DarkCloud
30th April 2003, 10:06
I don't know why but it won't import my ICQ list :(
luck777jojo
1st May 2003, 08:17
make sure you have ICQ 2003a..... then close ICQ and start miranda.... it'll contact the server and import your ICQ contact list.
Jacobus
4th May 2003, 15:05
thanx luck - I got the popup plugin, and Miranda has it (new popup options have appeared etc.). And it is enabled, but it doesnt tell me when I recieve new emails!
why wont it? Do you have to check when you want to find out? isnt it automatic?
wooolF[RM]
4th May 2003, 15:43
it is automatic, just configure your smtp/pop3 servers and restart miranda, that should do it... (again, works here just fine and if u call that for being "cruel" then...)
NightNinja
5th May 2003, 08:16
as i told wooolF before, Miranda is nice but nothing can ever beat the Original AIM no matter what it has... If miranda somehow gets everything aim has and can make it look like AIM then maybe Miranda but for now i havn't seen anything close to it... + look @ the vote aim beats Miranda 4 - 2 :p

NN - how can you off all people... a GMOD, be a minion to those anti-christ bastards at AOL? hehe - I know it's not much, but I do my part, I must have over 200 AOLO cd's in by bottom draw at home... everytime I C them, I grab a few. That ll stop them spreading out so fast. If only everyone else did the same.
p.s. WooolF... chillout seriously, I already explained that... your not one to hold a grudge are you?
officially... I no longer think you are cruel, your a great help and an obvious asset to this community at MPC, just sometimes I think you can be a bit blunt. You are an evil admin.... dont get upset wen 1 demi-noob calls you cruel!
wooolF[RM]

whenever I know I'm going to have guests over and I"m short of coasters or if I'm in the mood to play frisbee with my dogs or err... cat, I go to the local store and pick up a couple of AOL CD's.
They really know how to make a good coaster :D

Personally I like AIM by itself the best. However, the other two are nice. However, I get far fewer spams of porn related links from AIM than ICQ....
wooolF[RM]
10th May 2003, 03:33
cause ICQ is used way more then AIM
and there's setting in original ICQ to not recieve messages from not authorized users / not recieve pagers / not recieve webpages etc... everything very easy to configure, question is if u're too lazy to protect yourself...
same with your own box, if u don't protect it, someone will "hack" it with simple netbios and delete everything on your HDD or install a trojan on your pc...
first thing is antivirus, then simple firewall, then hardware firewall, then some more... more u do, lesser is the chance to get through and irritate you... simple and easy... everything depends on your lazyness
luck777jojo
10th May 2003, 07:11
hey...... it all depends on laziness..... the entire world depends on laziness...... if you're too lazy to lock the door to your house.... expect it to be robbed. Same with computers

wooolF[RM]
10th May 2003, 13:24
lol, sure u can :) try to access NASA's mainframe... cmon, just try... u'll be shot on the place just before u even THINK about it :) it's protected physically and from Internet hackers...
if we talk about normal box... u can protect it with a decent firewall and put your case in special safebox or some towers have special extra holes which u can use to close your tower with wires or even weld it to the floor... everything depends on the data u have in your box and how valuable u think it is and how paranoid u are :)

Well TBH Miranda pwns the others, except sometimes certain people using ICQ can't see what I type.
Some other statistic:
From 1999-2000 there were 500,000 hacking attempts at N.A.S.A

No problems :). I don't really care, but I have excessive compulsive disorder..... you should see me when I take notes, if something is out of place, I feel compelled to erase it and rewrite it........ I have written and erased some things over 10 or 15 times before accepting them....... Oh well, no biggy :).

hom much do you have it? Its called perfectionism too, im like that when i write serious papers and stuff, always erasing, editing. But one time I sat next to this guy on an airplane who had O.C.D really alot. And he kept moving things around and smashing things and going crazy:laugh: It was great.

Jacobus
20th May 2003, 09:50
meuh - you obviously havent tried Miranda, as without any plugins, it is ICQ, yet smaller and uses up less RAM and bandwidth. The main advantage is then that you can add on MSN, YahooIM, AIM etc. any IM you can think of to run in Miranda aswell. You can sign into all of them with one click, and it makes liefe so simple if say most of your friends use MSN, because of school, a few that you met online use ICQ, and some poor people you know use AIM, and you need to talk to them to. It's great!
