VAC scan/detection ?!

hey guys what does VAC actually do to do detect u as using cheats. does it scan .exe file or it scans for some 3rd party programs ?

i discovered that when i have played in server for like 3-6 mins then my firewall says that hl2.exe (CSS) wants to get access to some resources or communicate with some system files...i dont member exactly what did it say, but it was something like that.
is that the VAC scan maybe ? it doesnt matter do i allow or deny it .. nothing will change in game, but i was thinking that maybe its the VAC scan. i didnt read all the topics about, but i didnt seem to find anything about it ...so is it wht i think it is ?

VAC generally does a "footprint" detection method, they scan for processes they know can turn into hacks, basically a programmer will make a hack, and then some genius turns it over to VAC, bam they ban you.

Then they have a scanning function, there are LOADS of threads on GD all about vac, but if your really interested read the tort patrick put up. It explains quite a bit.
