Can Vac ban me if I'm on my way to a server with a detected hack, but I cancel the join? I mean, does it only scan in-game, or also with the loading gameprocess?

Sounds like that accidently happened to you.

It's unlikely that you get banned for that single case, I wouldn't worry.

VAC only scans whilst you're ingame. So you shouldn't get banned, happend to me too and I didn't get banned.

Thats wrong, connecting to a server only verifys your connection to make sure it is valid.

If a cheat is loaded into memory, or there is any code injection via a detected cheat you are at risk.

I would think if this only happened once then you should be ok.

I got VAC banned for loading into a map and imediately leaving when I realised wrong (detected) hack was on.

The only real way to know is ask someone who actually knows over at Steam HQ. :P
Personally I've accidently used a detected hack on a vac server awhile ago for less than 5 seconds and I was fine.

I used to play unreal tornament 2004, and their cheat system checked your game ( with a fat bloomin' lagconsiquence ) about 5 minutes into the game. And it would randomly do checks on you throughout, maybe that's how VAC does it. ( Unreal came out first, remember :P )
