I have massive screenlag when playing cs and its so bad i can not even play anymore. I play for about 2 minutes and then i get about 30 seconds of lag. I know its not a connection because it happens in otehr off-line games including Condition Zero.
Specs:
1.8 GHZ P4
80 GB
512 RAM
Windows XP Home
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro

I can not find the problem...ive tried closing all unneccessary progams and it still doesnt work...i played on the lowest possible settings and still nothing...ideas anyone?

thanks,
tiny

You sure you don't have any uneccesary procceses running? Since your specs sound fine it sounds like something is eating up cpu time/memory. How many processes are running? (ctrl+alt+del, task manager, processes tab) You could also try running ad-aware or spybot and see if it finds any malware progs running.

yea someone else told me to try a defrag...

Defrag is one of the nifty tools that Windows has provided us with. Too bad Windows is poorly programmed. That defrag should help, analyze your hard drive, and see what the Fragmentation percent is. In fact, post all the log on here, i'm interested to see.

So you're still having your screen lag after all the suggestions in the previous posts? Post that log if you can also.

just analyze the hard drive again and it'll pop up with the fragmentation. Also what kind of HD do you have? Model nbr etc, i'll check back after i mow my lawn :ermm:

I sometimes get it when I leave my computer on for about 24 hours, which sucks, I just restart the system.

However, I found out the recently MY lagging problem is actually the internet connection.

Since I have a static IP, script kiddies must have fixed their progs on me. And my firewall goes crazy... so when my computer starts to lag, I dont have to restart now, all I have to do is turn off my gateway for about 5 mins, let all the incoming connections die, turn it back on.

And during the time that the connection is dead, the PC will miraculously speeds up.

This is just me anyways.. dunno if your problem is similiar, (yes I know you mentioned it's not off-line), but try restarting the connection? Hmm.. hope I helped a bit.. or I might even get some advice ;) Good luck.

Well by having a look at your log, thanks for the attachment. I would defrag it again. It seems as though you still have some partial fragmentation on your hard drive. Though before fragmenting, delete any un-needed files, big files, small files, files of all sorts, on your computer, any junk that you don't need. and then Fragment, i find when my hard drive is clustered with BS, that it boggs down alot, even when I have already defragged. Anyhow, do such, and see how bad it lags. Someone wanna buy me a Western Digital Raptor Serial ATA Hard drive ? ... heh... i want one....

oh that's muuuch better,... run adaware plenty of times, I would also suggest reinstalling windows, and creating a ghost image of your fresh drive (and or with your known good installations and programs) then go from there. Its nice to have a imaged drive, so you can, start fresh, but not ghetto fresh. Try it out now, your fragmentation is down pretty good now, also check your settings on your card, antialiasing, etc etc etc. Also what ram do you run?

i had a thought...i popped open my case and realized...i hadnt cleaned it in about a year...i just took some paper towels and whipped it down and noticed a slight increase in performance...think if i took an air hose with a compressor on low pressure and cleaned it up real good that would fix it up? nothing else seems to be working...thanks

Cleaning regularly is definetely a good thing. All that dust build up can contribute to a lot of extra heat and puts a lot of stress on all your parts. I would definetely clean out your case at least twice a year if not more. Using a compressor at low pressure should work well. Also if you put a filter (piece of sponge, vacum filter, etc. . .) in front of your case's intake it can greatly reduce the amount of dust that gets in your case. Remember heat is your computers enemy.

be carefull blowing dust around inside your case
dust will conduct electricity and short your system out
had this happen with a friends computer burned his power supply, sparks flew out of it! lol
clean the heat sink for the processor i use an old tooth brush works good
