LOL, using a password to open up a file can incorporate encrption. For example maybe the file would be encrypted until you enter the decrypt code, decrypting the plain text message. If encryption messed up your files so no one could ever read them... Why would anyone use it? Think about it... :)

EDIT - Almost forgot, to encrypt a file in Windows XP just right click it, select properties, and choose encrypt. Mind you that this won't produce password protection. I don't know much about cryptography, but I think that when you encrypt a file it means only your computer can open it???

To encrypt stuff in windows XP right click on the file. Select properties than click advanced. Than check encrypt data to secure. After that click apply or ok and your done. Your computer can only read it. Arkonx left out that you have to click advanced so. You can also use programs to put passwords on files and encrypt them also. When you encrypt I think it changes the file so only your computer can decrypt it and than read it. Every encrypter on windows xp is different in its own way.

You can use winrar to set passwords on files. Download winrar than right click on the file and select "Add to archive..." Than click the "Advanced" tab and click "Set password" Enter password than click "OK" and "OK" again than it has a password.
