100. Paul Simon
My biased thoughts:
1. Where is Metallica? Metallica was one of the greatest artists of the 80's.. you cant exclude them from this list.
2. Where is ACDC? I think that ACDC should have been in the top 100, even if they were only in the 90's, which they probably should be imo.
3. Paul Simon got snubbed. He should have been much higher than #100.. his work was amazing.. and yet he's only #100.
4. Nirvana got snubbed as well. Nirvana was one of the most influential bands in the development of music today. #42 is a decent number (better than Paul Simon), but I would have probably put them in the top 25 at least. They changed the type of music that people listened to, and they changed the type of music people played.
5. U2 must have payed them off or something. There is no way that I would consider U2 one of the top 30 bands/artist of all time. Top 100, maybe.. top 30.. no way.

You're joking... right? MJ is good, definetly top 100, but top 5?
The Beatles are #1 no doubt.. whether you like them or not.. you cant put them out of the #1 slot for all they did for the music industry. #2 should be Led Zeppelin. They have countless amazing albums, and are top 5 no doubt. #3 is Jimi Hendrix. I personally havent listened to him as much as I should, but I know people who I trust that have, and they love his stuff. #4 is The Who. Another excellent band, great music, and even if you dont like classic rock, they are great. I thought I would hate the album Tommy, since it was sort of a ballad.. but I ended up liking it the most out of any of their albums. #5 is a toss-up, I wont put anyone in that slot since I havent listened to enough of the top artists in that list to listen to. Although, I know that Eric Clapton is better than Michael Jackson. So is Cream.. they sort of got snubbed in this list imo. Pink Floyd is better than MJ, so is Queen. Nirvana is better than MJ (but then again, im a biased nirvana fan.. wewt dave grohl/krist novoselic/kurt cobain).
^^ my opinions.. probably wrong in most standards.

If you think about it Felix, this entire list is an opinion by numerous people..
No one can judge what the best is. So I gues it is Crazy's opinion that MJ is hot in the pants.
Put whoever you want in #5, I agree with most of this list, but they left out more classical artists.

He was seriously influential, why he wasn't on the list I am baffled.
Punk.!

MJ had some great influence on the music we listen today imo.. he deserves a high spot. Frank Sinatra should be in it. #2 Elton John 17 ?? are they on drugs? #3 WHERE is any rapper like Tupac or something. I mean everybody sees and listens to Hip-hop and gangsta rap at sometime and whatever ur hearing i'm sure the guy who made it knows about Tupac.
I'm also missing any DJ. I mean DJ Tiesto is ****ing huge.
Download Thriller from Michael Jackson.. i'm sure u will be convinced. :)
Felix
13th July 2004, 01:24
Sure everybody listens to rap and shit, does that mean its any good?
If you asked anyone from America, that isnt into the internet or anything, who DJ Tiesto is, they would have no clue.

I totally agree with most of this list.. The Eagles yes..
I agree with top 9 ;)
why u2 should be that high up: (no im not a fan but ..)
U2 has successfully made #1 albums year after year after year, when i was born that year, and exactly 2 years after that they had the #1 best selling album, 10 years after i was born the STILL had a #1 top selling album, its not just about what sort of music they make, as everyone has different tastes, but the impact they have made on the music industry including their influence and fan base
btw. (again not a fan) but WTF NO Metallica?!!?

Heh, no I must agree, the list is fairly sorted.. and jsut for the record MJ is good, but I think he is put where he belongs dude in my honest opinion..
By the way, this is my new account so that my board and IRC names coincide :D (Formally likeit189) Post #1 man! I feel like sucha young noob again :)

the question is the REAL classical artists/composers like mozart with out them we wouldnt have ANY of the great bands not to mention they are a base to some metal music
AND WHERES OZZY!!!!!!!! (i mean without him metal and other bands/music types would never have had a good start)

Early rap records, commonly called "old school," were made by DJs scratching records and playing drum loops, with MCs rapping over the resulting rhythms. As the genre progressed, hard-rock guitars and hard-hitting beats were introduced by Run-D.M.C., the first hardcore rap group, and the scratching techniques were replaced by sampling. With their dense collages of samples, beats and white noise, Public Enemy took sampling to the extreme, and they helped introduce a social and political conscience to hip-hop. That faded in the '90s, as gangsta rap -- originally introduced by NWA, who used Public Enemy's sound as a template -- became the dominant form. By the '90s, gangsta rap, which originally was in direct opposition to such pop-oriented rappers as MC Hammer, had become smoothed over and stylish, and consequently was more popular than ever, as evidenced by the success of pop-gangsta Puff Daddy.
So if you are talking rap, only "old skool" stuff would be eligable, Public Enemy, De La Soul or Run DMC and maybe Tupac. Nowadays it's pop orientated like my paste says, and the artists just copy each other.
R&B as it exists today would be better called "Urban".

Anyway in closing:
Metallica should be on there
Black Sabbath should be on there
Vietfrost please drop the favouritism.

I am a Black Sabbath fan, but tbh, I dont think they should be on their. They only had a few good albums (their early stuff), and to be on a list of the best artists, you really should have a majority of good stuff.

okay sure but I still gotta agree with REDXIII where the hell is ozzy by himself (not black sabbath), most of HIS song were/are pretty damn popular, and he is still one of the most popular artist now. He should have been on there.

Although they are credited with being inspiration for Nirvana and there are so many covers of them.
I myself am not a fan of them, but I think they were very influential.

Trying to catch me off-guard? >_<
Yes, Black Sabbath was a good band. They only had 2-3 good albums though. If there werent any other good bands out there that should have been on the list, I would put BS on it, but since there are others that deserve it more than they do (ACDC, Metallica), I wouldnt put them on yet.

Yeah, it depends how the people who compiled this list defined "great".
Record sales
Influence
Following
Seriously though, Metallica have to be on that list. (I'm not some die hard fan FYI, but they are one of the greatest bands ever).
Gold is reached at shipments of 500,000 copies, with Platinum requiring 1 million units. The Diamond award honours sales of 10 million copies.
Total album by artist:
1. Pink Floyd (180 million)
2. Celine Dion (155 million)
3. Beatles (150 million)
4. Led Zeppelin (125 million)
5. Mariah Carey (105 million)
6. Elvis Presley (100 million)
7. Michael Jackson (100 million)
8. Elton John (100 million)
9. Garth Brooks (92 million, USA)
10. Eagles (65 million, USA)
11. Billy Joel (63 million, USA)
12. Aerosmith (54 million, USA)
13. Van Halen (50 million, USA)
14. Whitney Houston (49 million, USA)
15. Madonna (46 million, USA)
16. AC/DC (45 million, USA)
17. Bruce Springsteen (44 million, USA)
18. Rolling Stones (41 million, USA)
19. Metallica (41 million)
20. U2 (40 million)
USELESS FACTS:
The Beatles have sold more than 106 million records in the USA alone. They have five diamond albums, signifying sales of greater than 10 million copies: the White Album at 17 million copies, Beatles/1967-1070 at 14 million, and Beatles/1962-1966 at 13 million, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band at 11 million, Abbey Road at 11 million.
Elvis Presley remains the artist with the most gold and platinum records (77 million albums sold in the USA alone).
The Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is certified 26 times platinum, one more than Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982).
Mariah Carey's Music Box (1993) sold 23 million copies.
In 1999 'N Sync set the record of sales in the first week of a new release (2.4 million copies).
In 1999 the Pink Floyd had sold 180 million copies of their albums, about 20 million of The Wall (1979) alone. Dark Side Of The Moon (Harvest, 1973) was in the "Billboard" charts for over 600 weeks.
In 1999 the Led Zeppelin had sold 82 million copies of their albums.
Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (Columbia, 2000) sold 15 million copies in two years. 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' had sold over six million copies in the first year (2003).
IMHO, this is a much better list:

Personally, I dont like that list Syphon. It seems to judge an artist by how much they sell, which is usually a valid way to do it, but if you are only judging them on that, it doesnt seem right. Mariah Carey #5? There are so many better artists than her.

a list based on sells its a lot better than a list based on ur opinion and who u like.
if the poeple u liked listening to were better than her. then they'd sell more music than her and be on the list.
thats why its better to do it by music sells.

Ok, so you are saying that N'Sync is one of the greatest artists ever because they sold 2.4 million copies in the first week of one of their albums.
Just because someone sells copies doesnt mean they are a good artist. N'Sync doesnt even play music.. they just have their voice changed via studio.
