hrm if you have the winxp cd you can just do an upgrade from winME
winXP also usues lots of it's own drivers so that shouldn't be a problem

if you have a second partition put what you want to save on there or write it to a cd
dont just upgrade from win me to xp do a clean install it will cause problems
and just redowload all your drivers via n force what ever they are

Search on google for the drivers you are looking for... you might also need to use the CDs you bought with the hardware for certain hardware, just in case.

Always do a clean install!!!! Upgrading especially from me, the worst windows ever, is never a good idea. It leaves too much junk and settings behind. If you want a winxp install that's gonna last you a while definetely do a clean install.

Errors like that can be really hard to troubleshoot, I would reinstall (clean install).

The only driver that you should make sure you have before doing the clean install is the NIC driver because once you can get on the net again you can get all the other drivers you need.
Drivers for all components. Visit your component manufacturers website for the drivers. Also when you run windows updates it finds some drivers.

Hey Man to Cleanly Upgrade just partion your drive, Format it and Install Windows XP. Its as easy as that and if your need data on your windows me operating system burn the files on a cd and install them or unzip them in Windows Xp simple as that.

MOST compaq computers wont handle xp pro they usally have 256 of memory
you should have 512 to run xp pro

win xp should see the nic card and install win default drivers for it
not for older NIC's.

That's not true, you only need 64mb of memory although it will lag like crazy, still you only need 256mb for it to run decent. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx
do i download the windows Xp ones or windows Me files?
Well you're going to need the xp ones, although like I posted earlier winxp should have most of the drivers you need and as long as you have the NIC driver you can get back on the net and download others. But yeah you need the xp ones just burn em on a cd or something.
