Well, I finished Doom3 a few minutes back.

What I have to say is that I was suprised at how well my system ran it. (one of the better GeForce3/64MB ram)

For some reason Doom3 defaults to lowest detail and 640x480. Using this setting and textures for some reason it get *very* chunky after exiting the elevator in the communications tower. I tried many save games and reloads and attempted not to shoot certain enemies just to see if I could avoid the chunky graphics and eventual lockup problem. No dice.

So I then said why not to myself and cranked it up to 800X600 and put the graphics quality to the one just below Ultra maxed out and no more slow graphics, no more chunky video leading to lockups. Everything looked great and it was an enjoyable time had by all :)

So keep that in mind if you lock up or chunk badly. I think they went a little too far by defaulting everything so low.

I also found something else interesting. Doom3 is a remake of the original story line and as such it was quite good at first to revisit the past. However, after a while, it soon became a repetative game. The levels would change but its the same basic monsters strategically placed off to the side of door openings and behind corners ready to pounce into action. I dare say I started getting bored near the end until I got into hell and got to experience something besides hours on end of space station hallways and rooms.

As far as guns go, the fact that you run out of bullets rather quickly means you will end up cycling through different weapons so you won't be stuck playing with your favorite gun. The chainsaw is nice but I found it useless until I got tired of all the monsters attacking and decided to go crazy like an insane guy slashing everything in my path until I died. (it was good for sress relief)

But the graphics are good, the sound is great, and it has a good "wow" material to keep the incomming Doom players, some who may not have played the original, quite happy.

I think its going to get good ratings.

Yes it's OpenGL, naturally. And no, it's not the Quake engine, it's a brand new engine, the Doom 3 engine...

The Doom 3 Engine....it has a nice ring to it :). Just think....porting popular HL mods to the Doom 3 engine. It would be hard, but damn....Day of Defeat with real life physics.

Well, those HL mods will be ported to Valve's new "Source Engine". For example, Counter-Strike: Source (already in development). That's the new Half-Life engine. Very unlikely they will use the Doom 3 engine when they have their own new one coming out soon...

Actually, according to the man who coded it, John Carmack, he used the Q3 engine as a foundation to begin playing with his new ideas, then once he had them fleshed out and working, he began a ground-up rewrite. So the ideas were developed as far as they could be on Q3, but the D3 engine is a completely new engine built from scratch.

Just a quick note to add:

1) If you want to access console right away, you can skip modifying the shortcut, and use CONTROL+ALT+TILDE(~) when in the game. I would only suggest switching to something like fists and not hold a rocket launcher while facing a wall when you go press these keys :)

2) A lot of the old Doom console cheats work

3) I saw a file floating around called "Doom3 Multiplayer Trainer", I havn't tested it yet to see if its a single player trainer, a multiplayer hack, or a trojan key-stealing piece of dung.

Uhh moved to Other FPS.

I was very surprised at the length of the game actually. Very long.

If you start getting chunky graphics and artifacts, chances are your card is overheating.

Definately long, in my mind it was getting tedious, but long is an understatement :) Carmack and the entire id team must be perfectionists!

Good to know. So if you have artifacts, consider an overheat. I just had consistent chunking and eventual psuedo lockup/freezing.

My chunking happened at the same section in the map all the time and always was repeatable. I have my case open and full ventilation and no GFX card overclocking. It was a simple case of GeForce3 performing poorly at 640x480 resolution mode on the low settings compared to higher resolution modes which has been a symptom I noticed in other games and benchmarks. This particular chip likes to run at higher resolutions and bit-depths which tells me its been optimized for said modes.

Also, I think we could import a triggerbot from MOHAA or something if we can make neon/cham skins, till a good aimbot is made.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, I dont even have the game yet.

This is gunna be fun.

I'm now looking at HL2, and the game that slipped under the radar from all the HL2 vs Doom3 hype in the magazines and websites, its called Stalker. :rambo:

Just got doom 3 today was pretty shocked really as its not meant to be out here in the UK till the 13th :)

I've already been playing it however for days :)

Doom 3 looks & plays amazing!! I play with stereophones on, so it's creepy as hell hearing every little groan, hiss, and snarl from creatures in every corner (not to mention the wispers,screams,cries for help,etc.). And using the flashlight in areas that are pitch black to only be attacked from behind can sometimes scare the shit out of you. :confused: It's money well spent. I'm not really into the run and gun shooters when it comes to multiplayer, but the levels are so beautifully designed, along with tight gameplay, that it more than makes up for it with me. I've been fragged several times just 'cause I'm exploring the maps in awe (much like Far Cry-lol).

When the forum takes off, I'm sure that we'll be in for a real treat once the mod community gets goin'. It's been a long time comin' and this is gonna be great!

Actually this is pretty tame. If you want to litterally have the shit scared out of you to where you throw your headphones down and make a solemn oath to yourself never to play again, you need to play Thief 3, the level that is called Shalebridge Cradle. A lot of gamers have considered that this may be the scariest thing ever to show up in a video game!

I have not seen Hollywood movies that could capture the scare you senseless ability this level has evoked when people finally make it there.

Even I don't want to go back and install Theif 3 again just to relive the experience :) :bath: :croc:

But it wont work for some reason....

The doom3 engine is a beefed-up Q3 engine....
And, some things are REALLY different...

The thing I made here, works local, but not when I join some server....
(it's just a start, only bright-skin, non-chameleon)

Doom3 does some weirdo overwriting shit, or i'm just heading the wrong way with the scripts...

Nope, iddqd and idkfa both don't work, just the god and give commands like most Quake games.

Metroman is right about Theif 3 - that cradle level is the scariest peice of gaming I have ever experienced compared to Doom 3's cheezy behind-your-back entity spawning.

I've been working on a trainer that works for both SP and MP - I will probably release it once I add more features. Right now it has...

I finished the game an was amazed at the detail an graffics, as i was an old dos doom player i really got into this one.
I do wonder tho if it will at some point as in the old doom be able to have players make wad or map files for it like we did in doom for share , single an multi play.

because the most server are PURE server that means localy edited files are not accepted only the original files on the server

easy to bypass in opengl ..

It's funny considering they spent so much time making sure the game was "perfect" before it was released. Obviously, they left out a few lines of code.

well yeas and no it says 4 in the manual, but i got it the day it came out and first thing i sw was a 24 player server... so there are 8,16, and 24 but its not offical.

Same here. Don't get me wrong the grafix rule. But it gets tedious after a while. Good scares though. Have you guys read the gamespot review? Pretty harsh. But PC Gamer gave it a 94%. My guess is cause they were allowed to review it b4 ne one else. Just my opinion.

yeh, that guy is easy....
btw, before you get the cutscene (walls goin open etc.)
try tor stick to the the left, so you skip the cutscene...
then you'll come into a room with a stone, wich says ID on it....
just click on it, and there will open a room, with pda, including emails from the developers ;)
