the "Hex" way: (GAME MUST BE INSTALLED FIRST!)
first get a hex editor, start it up and open doom3.exe, search for a text string: "GlobalMemoryStatusEx" and you have to change both the "E" and the "x" into "00" (hex mode) and then save, works perfect on 98SE and 2003..
the "doom3.msi" way:
(modified doom3.msi)
first get the modified doom3.msi HERE (http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/144010.shtml), then get winiso or something else and open up cd1.bin, delete the existing doom3.msi and replace it with the modified doom3.msi, then save the .bin and then install the game..
(manually editing the original doom3.msi from .bin)
get orca HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255905) or something else and open up doom3.msi from CD1 and look for the string "LaunchCondition" (check screenshot) and delete it, the OS check is gone..

the "manually installing doom3" way: (DO NOT INSTALL THE GAME FIRST)
create a new folder called "Doom 3", then copy the file doom3.exe from cd1 into that folder, inside the "Doom 3" folder you create another folder called "base", then copy all files from ALL cd's wich are located in "\setup\data\base\", hit doom3.exe and it should work..
READ:
people who have the problem that the game wont save your controls resulting ino default controls at the next game-startup:
open the game and change the controls to whatever you like, go ingame and open up console and type: "writeconfig new" , then go to the doom3 "base" folder and you will see the file new.cfg, delete the orginal DoomConfig.cfg and then rename the new.cfg to DoomConfig.cfg

this is all i have found so far and i can say it works here on 98SE and 2003, couldnt test more OS's :P
i hope one of these works for you ;)
