FIFA receives 400,000 hate e-mails
(Jun 22) YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) - FIFA has received about 400,000 hateful e-mails from Italy fans irate over refereeing in the Italy-South Korea World Cup match.
``Some of them (were) virulent, some quite abusive, some of them very threatening, some of them quite disturbing,'' Keith Cooper, a FIFA spokesman said Saturday.
The Internet traffic was so great that it crashed FIFA's e-mail system server, he said.
Many Italians blame the Italian team's 2-1 loss Tuesday to South Korea, which eliminated Italy from the World Cup, on poor refereeing and claim that the Italians were victims of a string of bad calls thoughout the tournament.
During the World Cup, Italy had five goals disallowed, including one in Tuesday's match, mainly for questionable offside calls. Video replays have shown that some of them may have been valid goals.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has denied any conspiracy but conceded several dubious decisions had damaged the Italians.
Cooper said he personally responded to several of the angry e-mails, including one man ``who suggested I perish as rapidly as possible.
``I wrote back to him and explained a little bit of the way we operate, and how the referees are only human,'' Cooper said, summarizing his response.
``If the game was organized in a machine-like way, it would no longer so interesting, and would you continue to be in love with the game if it was run like a machine? Would you continue to be love with your wife or girlfriend if she were run like a machine?
``I thought that was a line that might appeal to most Italians.''
Cooper said the man wrote back to apologize.
``So I'd like to think that the vast majority of the 400,000 have also come to think they overreacted a little bit,'' Cooper said.

Would somebody please give me a break? Would you believe what a polititian says when he's backed into a corner...Of course not!! Cooper is an *****...Comparing the poor performance of his referrees to the love for ones wife...No, I don't expect the referrees to perform like machines... I expect only that they do what they are payed to do and that is call a fair game based on what is happening on the pitch. Their pathetic performance on the field through their bad calls and constant errors are proof enough for me, that they are not doing their job!! Anywhere in the world, you are dismissed if you do not perform your job to the standards of the company you work for...yet, in World Cup Soccer, you are defended by the management...The math is quite simple...We pay you to do a job, this is how you do your job..now do you your job...If you don't do it right, you don't have a job...400,000 people can't be wrong...The officiating was one sided against Italy throughout the entire tournament and had half of those goals not been called back, Italy would still be in contention. That is the plain truth. I think it's pathetic that the referrees clearly admit that they made bad calls and still, they are defended by Cooper...What a poor display of management...The worse part is that the players and the fans are the ones who suffer the most as a result of this mess...What has World Class Soccer come to these days....The winners of World Cup 2002 will be the refs..
