Play in window mode and you'll be fine...
Window mode isnt a hack, it is actually a setting within the game :)

I have the same video card you do and a 2.13 processor and 1 GB of ram. I can only run the game smoothly at 800x600 (and when I turn sharply, the environment has to reload due to having 64 MB of video memory). It's going to be choppy as hell for you - probably unplayable.
