What is the best and next best graphics card for HL2? What is the preferred card for HL2? Im still stuck with this 32mb card......and ive been waiting 6 years to play this game. I think its time to update. This is what I got now:
hp
1.6ghz pentium 4
512MB DDR SDRam memory
80 GB Ultra DMA hard drive
32mb nvidia TNT 2 m64
CD-RW cd writer 16x8x40x max speed

Can anyone help me and and give me some advice?

best card for HL2 is the ATI Radeon x800 XT, but you can go higher with an x850XT (if you have PCI-E which you dont). The ATI Radeon 9800XT is also a good card for HL2.

Man, i jus checked out that x800. Sounds promising but that chit big money. I guess cuz its big n new. But since that came out, i see that the 9800xt price has gone down. Now its a lil more affordable. I also was thinking and heard good things on the 9600xt. Whats your opinion on that? The best card ive had was the ati 9000 pro so id prolly be satisfied with that, but i wanna do the best i can do. Whats up with the nVidias? Anyone else wanna share some opinions?
BTW: thanx

9600XT is a great mid-level card..but if you want a high level card, try out the 9800 pro or xt.

I've been playing HL2 for some time now with an ATI 9700 Pro with all settings maxed out and 1280x1024 resolution. Looks beautiful, the only time I get serious slowdown is when I look at large areas of water with real-time reflections. Don't buy a top of the line card unless you plan on upgrading your CPU as well, otherwise you'll just be bottlenecking and won't get the most out of your new purchase.

What part of my CPU should I upgrade along with a top-of-the-line graphics card? Thats another answer I was looking forward too.

cpu upgrade might be difficult, u have a P4 1.6ghz and i think thats on a 423 socket, P4 is now at 775 socket, and u can still get some 478 skts as well, so unless u wanna upgrade motherboard at same time forget cpu upgrade. some more RAM would be a good idea, its chip enough these days and ur system will love, especially when loading the game.
Graphics cards. odd thing is i hear ppl have no trouble playing this game with Geforce 5200 cards. the 9600 is a good card, but for a bit of extra cash u can get the 9800SE or a 9800ati all-in-1-wonder and either softmod or overclock to a 9800pro very easily.

The 9800 and all versions of it are mid range cards. Get a Nvidia 6600GT AGP as they're about the same price as a 9800 and a lot faster (The core and memory clock speeds are much better) unless you're willing to fork out $400 on a card.
