IT SEEMS PRESIDENT Bush wants to shore up cyberspace as part of his programme to turn the US into a security state.
Bush is due is to unveil a plan designed to protect the Internet from some terrorist attack this coming September, and this week, the president's computer security adviser, Richard Clarke, was outlining the bones of the plan, including how it is the patriotic American's duty to install a firewall.
"Every American relies upon cyberspace and every American has to do something to secure their part of cyberspace," said Clarke, in apparent earnestness.
Clarke said the upcoming plan consisted so far of 77 recomendations that would not be enforced by law but which would constitute the Internet-focused part of a "national strategy for homeland defense" outlined by the President recently.
He also told reporters of a government programme designed to secure Microsoft's Windows 2000, which happens to be the operating system most favoured to run most government and corporate computers.
Security agencies, said Clarke, had devised a test, dubbed the Gold Standard, which will be applied to all governmental and many corporate computers to ensure they are safe from penetration. Of particular concern to security experts are the privately-owned computers that run amenities like water and power supplies in the nervy US.
Expect software security companies and anti-virus makers to be rubbing their hands together with glee as more of the 77-point plan becomes known.
