I never owned any routers before, but I had configured a different router before "Cisco routers".

If you can, have a look at the new router documentation that comes with it, if it does have any configurations, such as router configurations it would be great. Look around for security settings on ports.

Your close friend has suggested a kind of a good idea imo, I partially agree with what he says. Rerouting the ports would be an option but you need a program and you need to keep that running. Now, setting the ports such as rerouting 27001 eg to 80 or 21. Routing to common ports 'might' get passed the linksys router.

The idea about the DMZ 'demilitarlized zones' or whatever they are called, they are what I'm a bit concerned of. Setting them up depends on where you do want hackers to go. The idea of a DMZ is to allow people who wants to go a certain place on a host pc but founds out that it is not possible because it has been filtered to dmz and that means once the user goes there, the user cannot infiltrate the server anymore because that is the only possible place the user can go to.

Speaking of which, if you can configure dmz zones on the router, you should be able to configure the security settings on ports. You could also try port rerouting by using the router to do it if it also has that capabilities as it normally does.
