Do you guys know how to multi-boot? I tried and searched for so long and when I solve a problem theres always another problem afterwards. Its really starting to tick me off. This is my last chance to get this working so can you guys PLEASE PLEASE help me? Thank you very much.
I ran into a couple of error and troubles but i fixed them but this one is really stumping me. When I begin to scan my computer (in DOS, you need this scan prior to the installation) it says that my computer is not in condition to install. It says that i have to disable something like "Compressed Volume" & "Disc-cache utility". I can usually fix this by searching the web for tutorials but my computer is in CHINESE!! and i cant read chinese, ive lived here all my life. Can you please tell me where to go in my system to disable these two things? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

everything worked fine till i tried to create a new primary partition, it says that i dont have enough space for it. I have 3 unknown partitions (probally from Norton GHOST) which is taking 7585mg,603 mg, and 674 mg. Three total unknown partitions, should i get rid of them? Will it even help free some space for my new partition? Also, it says that i have 2 drives.. DOes that mean 2 harddrives? or just two cd-rom drives? Do you really need TWO harddiscs (split)?
Srry for asking so many questions

I have exactly the same problem as this guy, but this guy figured it out befoe ppl tried to help him =[. Also,im MULTI-BOOTING, not wat he's doin
heres wat he said (all his posts):
I just bought a new PC but I did not buy an operating system. (Tried to save some money since I have gotten an operating system 2 times in the last couple of years anyway.)
I have my Win 95 CD, (still looking for my win 98 CD). I thought it would run by choosing the option to boot from CD rom in the CMOS. However it does not. I found the driver for the CD rom on the net, made a system floppy to boot from and now formatted the hard drive.
First, is there anything or if I find my Win 98 CD, will it load automatically from the CD without using the floppy and the driver.
If not, I have little DOS memory, but I have changed the config.sys file on the boot-up disk to the specs for the CD-rom. But is there something else I have to do because the CD is still not being read. I thought I remembered doing something to the autoexec.bat file also in order to specify a drive for the CD or something. Any help would be appreciated. I hated giving microsoft money for updates that do little for my uses, but this has been a lot of trouble.
Okay....now what?
I was able to boot to my A: drive. Also able to find the correct driver for my CD rom so I can now read my CDrom on the E: drive. When I formatted the hard drive, I formatted for 1 large drive, but I do have a C drive and a D drive which is listed as a RAMdrive.
Here's the problem. I cannot load from my Win 95 cd. When I run the SETUP the program begins with a warning about the version of Scandisk will only work with MSDos version 5.0 and later. Setup found a compressed volume or a disk cache utility. Quit and check or remove your disk cache utility begin setup again. I can hit esc to continue. Then while installing it stops and gives the following error --
Setup error detection: Error SU-0013 Setup could not create files on your startup drive and cannot setup Windows.
Please help. First message got me half way there. I already had run Fdisk before and removed partitions, (but I got lazy and did not remove the last one so I don't know if I need to go back and do this.) Also I formatted my hard drive with a win 98 system disk from my work PC. Just trying to give as much info as possible so you will know what is going on. Thanks.
Got it.
Finally got it the other day. Thanks for the interest, but it turned out to be a problem with the version of ScanDisk. I finally decided to try loading the win 98 upgrade disk first. Believe it or not it didn't have to have win 95 loaded, you just had to be able to load the CD into the drive for it to validate it. Wow....I wouldn't have thought MSFT would have actually done that. Usually they kinda screw you into buying the newest FULL version of everything. I tried to save a dollar and for once I actually did.
thanks guys

well i don't know if you fixed it and got it but heres what i used to do and it prob. was the hard way but i thought it was pretty straight for me:
Most importantly you need two hard drives never try and boot two os's in partitions
FAT32
1. either boot to the install cd or create a boot floppy and use dos
2. make sure the drive you are installing with is formatted
3. type in at the C prompt "fdisk"
4. go in and look at the partitions and of both drives
you have to choose the drives to look at
5. if it is not then you have to create the partition and then reboot and format
6. to format type at the C prompt "format" and space the drive letter
7. if all good then put in the cd and exe the setup file
8. make sure you select the drive letter you want to install on and all windows installations will let you select it some are dif but just look for it when it asks
it should do the rest auto like
NTFS
1. if you r running NTFS it is best the new os you want to multi boot with is NTFS too i wouldn't suggest FAT32 and NTFS but you can still make it work you just won't be able to both drives
ok either boot to the cd or use the boot floopy and select the exe setup file
hopefully you know how to exe a file
but that is all there is to it

No, I havent got it yet. Well...sigh, im really not a computer wiz
1: How do you split your harddrive?
2: Is a harddrive like drive C:, drive D:\ etc? Cause i know partitions are these Drives (C:\ etc)
3. I guess all i need is to split my drive and everything will be fine. Cause i got some tutorials on partitions and everything but i cant find anything bout splitting you drive.
I should have got windows 98 first, THEN multi-boot using windows 98 to do this. Thats wat i did before and i didnt have to do anything manually.
Oi...

K, I have an idea thats alot easier than doing it manually. How bout i back-up ALL my files and then reformat. Start from scratch again and then instead of installing XP first I will install Windows 98. I think Windows XP has an option to either replace windows 98 with XP or multi-boot. Is this true? IF it is then i'll choose multi-boot and for my windows XP i'll recover my drive again, so i'll have all my files back on XP. Will that work? Or will the "back-up" actually back-up my drives (Including Windows 98) to what it was before? (when it was only windows XP)?

!!!!!!!! lol, thats exactly what im askin you guys for.
First Problem: Dont have 2 harddrives===asking HOW to split harddrives without loosing any of my existing data
Second Problem: Partitioning AFTER formatting my 2 harddrives===Ive got some tutorials on that, no worrys
Third Problem: I'll make a back-up prior to splitting harddrvie ( ppl say that you loose data after splitting?)====Will the back-up BACK UP everything including UN-SPLITTING my harddrive?

i am going to give you a bit of advice.... partitions and dual boots are nasty.... but to make partions on a drive boot to floopy... then at the c:\ type fdisk and just read the directions pretty easy.... but the idea of what you are doing is important... you really have to be starting from scratch to do it this way with no os but your boot floppy... i really don't know how you would create partitions on a drive any other way... but like i said before not a real good idea to have two os's on one drive... better to do it with two hard drives... and even then it somthing always seems to mess up down the road.... but still kinda cool to do for awhile

A few software that might help,
backing up a partition or a drive: Norton Ghost
boot loaders: Partition magic as Xcavation and a few other said, system commander
With Norton Ghost, you need at least 2gb of free space before doing a dump and make sure that it is on the other partition that has more than 2 gb of free space.

sure, insert a boot disk(any one) and boot from DOS. Delete ALL your files (ALL OF THEM, or else it wont work) and then screw with your IP. Reboot, and your done!
