I have Adobe Photoshop 7 and i am trying to make an icon. I have everything ready except i have 1 color i want to make transparent. I looked in the help file and it says to map colors to transparent colors you must hit a certain button but after continous looking and such i cannot find out what i must do. I also have Paint Shop Pro 7 and read the help file for that as well, i tried it and couldn't succeed, then somehow i did it and then saved it, then when i tried doing it on another picture i couldn't do it! I really want to make this certain color transparent if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

i dont get what you mean..if your talking about what i think, just make a new layer, fill it with the color you want and set the opacity down

Use the magic wand, and select that certain color you want to make transparent, and press Delete. Tada!

Make sure the layer is on the bottom.

If you want a clear background, an easy way to do that is with the Gif optimizer in paint shop pro. I've used it a couple times and it works pretty well. If you want to see an example just click on this link and look at the first pic on my site. (the head)

You shouldn´t use photoshop to make icosn, Is better to use a specific program like articons, anytoicon,...
