Question about jotti/downloading files/keyloggers/trojans.

Okay, so when you are downloading things you obviously need to be aware of keyloggers, trojans, etc... So how do these things work? For example, when I use jotti to scan things, I have to have the file already on my computer (unless their is a way to scan the file without downloading it).

So (with my current knowledge) I assume that you HAVE to download the file first and then upload it to jotti. If I am correct, then my question is how do Trojans/keyloggers work? The downloads on here are in zip file, but is it possible to put a keylogger/trojan on that zip file and when you download it, it is already on your computer?

I mean, what if I download something off of here (and it is a zip) do I have to unzip it first for the trojan/keylogger to get on my computer? Or is it possible for the trojan/keylogger to automatically go on your computer as soon as you download the file?

Sorry if this is a confusing post, but I'm sure someone may be able to figure out what I mean and help me out. I have a lot of information that I am trying to type out that I don't really understand so I'm kind of confused while typing this.

In a nut shell...

A virus/trojan/backdoor or whatever needs to be executed most of the time to infect you're computer. For the most part, you're ok with downloading the file as long as you do not initialize it.

So Scan. Then delete in necessary.

How do keyloggers work?, Basically it record what you type, and mouseclicks and screenshots of what you are doing?. How is this possible? I havn't scanned pretty deeply much into keylogger but i belive that keyloggers are made out of Visual Basic.

it logs your keyboard buffer that's y any keys u pressed on the keyboard will be recorded: eg. u typed a password but got some typo error
e.g: key "p", key "a", key "s", key "s", key "e", key "<<backspace>>", key "w", key "o", key "r", key "d", key "<<carriage return>>"
